New bills: Cops would lose immunity for sex with prostitutes

LANSING — Under Michigan law, it's legal for police to have sex with prostitutes during an undercover investigation, but state Rep. Gary Glenn, R-Midland, introduced a bill last week that would end that exemption.
Michigan is the only state in the nation to still provide immunity from prosecution for cops who have sex with prostitutes during an investigation, said University of Michigan law professor Bridgette Carr, who works with the university's Human Trafficking clinic. It was an exemption that was provided to protect officers during sting investigations of prostitution rings.

I've heard some "back in the day" stories, circa that skeevy decade known as the 1970s, where cops- with total support (maybe even direction) from department management- would fully 'utilize' the services of prostitutes in furtherance of enforcing the law. The thinking was that by completing the 'act', the prosecution would be more solid.

But that was then. No departments have operated that way in a long time. And no prosecutor would dare take a case where the officer went half way, much less all the way, with a hooker (now called 'victims of human-trafficking').

The very thought of having sex (as part of your job) with the typical drug-addicted, STD-riddled, Michigan Avenue streetwalker makes me shudder.

I realize I may have seen too many cop shows, but doesn't the mark just have to confirm the transaction for an officer to have probably cause for pandering? Just the same as an undercover officer only needs the John to agree to a price?
My hand to God, she's gonna be at Carnegie Hall. But you - I'll let you have her now at the old price, OK? Which is, which is anything you wanna give me. Anything at all.

Technically, yes, but 'back in the day', sometimes they went the extra mile to prove the case.

They're lucky they didn't get smoked at the door. That's what happens in most of the world- if a couple of angry guys wearing body armor and AK-47s advanced a police station in Mexico or Russia or Thailand, the only sign of an incident would be the fresh bullet holes in the wall. Here they get viral videos and NRA lawyers.

Is the NRA lining up behind these guys? The NRA is providing support of any kind? God, I hope not.

I've said it before as well: open carry isn't productive and the most active of the bunch are an embarrassment to regular gun aficianados.

When was the arraignment? The article is dated March 20 but later in the article it states: Both men are due back in court March 10.
Oh, and I think the Dearborn PD needs to use this Image as their recruitment poster.

Crap journalism, or rather crap editing, I believe. Looked to me that part of an old story was recycled and the foul-up with dates and verb tense was missed by whomever proofed the copy.

Just guessing now, but it seems that at least the older of the two made bail as he recently posted YouTube videos about his martyrdom experience. The YouTube vid (didn't watch, just found it on a hunch) had an avalanche of down-votes which gives me reason to believe America has a future.

The freedom riders road and marched for equal rights and I admire what they did. Patriots of the revolution stood up and then fought for representative government and I admire them, too. Ghandi, Martin Luther King, and even Karl Marx all perceived injustices and earned places in history. Trust-busting Teddy Roosevelt did the same, as did Ida Tarbell, pro-life activists, Green Peace, Mother Teresa, Clara Barton, Andrew Carnegie, and more. I don't agree with all that they stood for or agree with the outcomes that they wrought, but there was something of value an uplifting for humanity in all the work of all of them. Nothing about these two showboating pin-dicks puts them anywhere near the likes of legitimate activists. And gun nut that I am I say that the antics of the kind perpetrated by these two undermine my certainty that a second ammendment is worth having.

I watched the video up to the takedown of the person with the camera. Jesus Christ, what in blue fuck were these idiots thinking?

- The creator of the video is not a journalist; he's a provocateur. One of the most basic fundamentals of journalism is not to create the story. Here, these jamokes are basically showing up to get a rise out of the cops. It worked, but it's probably not going to yield the result they're hoping for.
The NRA lawyers won't be taking their calls, mostly because wide exposure of this case (and this video) will amply demonstrate the need for gun-free 'zones.' A sensible attorney, I'd hope, would sternly recommend they plead guilty ... and deeply thank their creators that they're alive to cop to that plea.

- The restraint the cops showed is pretty impressive. Dearborn trains 'em well. If I was on the grand jury for the cop that dumped the guy(s), I'd vote to decline to prosecute after the first 'fuck you' was uttered.
And for fuck's sake, they did it in Dearborn, where a traffic stop for speeding often brings an extra scout car. What did these morons think was going to happen?

- And what on earth makes these guys, both of whom are middle-aged men, to think this is a good use of their time? Like Craig said, there are things out there worth fighting and even dying for to make this place better ... unintentional suicide by cop is not the best way to fight for freedom to walk around with a rifle slung over your shoulder.

I couldn't get the content to cut and paste, but the gist of the below story is a UM grad student rented a plane in AA, flew up into the Ontario wilderness north of Lake Superior, opened the door and jumped out, and eventually the plane crashed. His body has yet to be found, and will probably a pile of scattered bones when found by hunters in 20 years.

What a way to go. Nice destroying someone's else 100K+ plane, btw.

Something that wasn't in the news this week, but I know because I know certain things, is a young man jumped off the Belle Isle bridge on Monday. Before he jumped, he attached a couple of heavy weightlifting plates to a strap around his body to ensure a quick descent to the bottom of the Detroit River. Divers found his body about four hours later.

People used to kill themselves by sitting in the garage with the car running or jumping in front of a semi. The Millenials, ever the innovators, are apparently using technology.

Dude flew an airplane and then hopped out? I suppose that he could have done that anywhere between Ann Arbor and Moose 'Nads or wherever the plane went down. I'm trying to imagine how disorienting it might be for some up north retiree or a dude in Saginaw to find a smashed person in their front yard or tangled up in the apple tree. I wonder if at any point in the descent that a higher meaning for life and happiness burst into mind and the pilot thought "crap, NOW I figure it out!"?

Gamrat husband ID'd as person who sent Courser texts

Lapeer County Prosecutor Timothy Turkelson said he will not file charges in the case of anonymous text messages sent to former state Reps. Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat in an effort to get them to end an extramarital affair.

Turkelson said Gamrat's husband, Joe Gamrat, and other individuals he did not name were responsible for the plan to send texts from a prepaid burner phone.

"The results of the investigation confirm that Joe Gamrat ... was motivated to end the ongoing affair between his wife and Todd Courser," Turkelson said in a statement. "The messages therefore do not rise to the level of criminal extortion."

According to the Michigan State Police report, Joe Gamrat gave co-worker David Horr of Ft. Gratiot money to buy the burner phone. He would then tell him what to say in texts that Horr sent to Courser and Cindy Gamrat. The report also revealed that Joe Gamrat suspected the affair in mid-2014 and placed bugs in his wife's car to try to get evidence of the liaisons.

Courser blasted the decision in a Facebook post and video, saying that two former staffers who were fired were responsible for colluding with Joe Gamrat and the leadership in the Michigan House of Representatives to get him out of office.

"None of this absolves me of my own failures in this, but my failures cannot justify the evil and demonic plot these men carried out — and the hell of lies they have vomited," he said.

Gamrat, in a Facebook post, said she never caved to the demands to resign in the "lurid, disturbing and intimidating messages."

"As you can imagine, I was devastated to hear that the investigation appears to show that a number of individuals, including my husband, former staff from my office, and others, collaborated and had some degree of involvement together," she wrote. "After I have taken the time to look at the full report, I will thoughtfully consider what the right action is to take to move forward."

The former staffers, Ben Graham and Keith Allard, have denied any involvement in a plot to get Courser out of office, but Joe Gamrat told investigators that he frequently communicated with them, along with Josh Cline, who resigned from Courser's office in April.

Courser resigned from his seat in the House of Representatives on Sept. 11, and Gamrat was expelled by her colleagues the same day. Both ran to fill their vacant seats, but lost in the Nov. 3 primary election.

The pair were caught up in a sex scandal and bizarre cover-up in which Courser admitted sending out an anonymous e-mail in which he claimed he was a sexual deviant addicted to porn who paid for sex with men outside of bars in Lansing. The e-mail, which was widely distributed around Lansing, was intended to make it appear that Courser and Gamrat were the victims of a smear campaign and to make news of the affair pale in comparison.

Courser has said he was a desperate man reacting to text messages that threatened to expose the affair if he didn't leave office.

Turkelson said: "None of the individuals involved in this matter come to the table with clean hands. All bear some responsibility in creating this embarrassing and costly chapter in our county's history. Under these circumstances, I see no benefit in prolonging this saga at the expense of Lapeer County taxpayers in a prosecution that would be tenuous, at best."

While this portion of the saga may be over, a lawsuit by Allard and Graham against Courser and Gamrat continues. They have sued the former lawmakers for wrongful termination under the Whistleblowers' Protection Act.

I guess the so call "couples counseling" referred to by Ms. Gamrat previously wasn't enough to stop the extra curricular activities.

Like Gamrat's husband needed help looking like a pitiful, cuckolded worm.

Now she's suing everybody.

Lovely story here; and another Jumana. The lawyer ought to sue. She did the deed in Livonia, but she's a staff doctor at Henry Ford on the Blvd.
https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/metro-detroit-doctor-charged-with-performing-female-genital-mutilation-on-young-girls
DETROIT - A Detroit emergency department doctor has been arrested and charged with performing female genital mutilation on young girls at a medical clinic in Livonia, officials announced Thursday.

Dr. Jumana Nagarwala, 44, of Northville, is charged with performing female genital mutilation (FGM) on girls who were 6 to 8 years old at a medical office in Livonia.

"According to the complaint, despite her oath to care for her patients, Dr. Nagarwala is alleged to have performed horrifying acts of brutality on the most vulnerable victims," acting assistant Attorney General Blanco said. "The Department of Justice is committed to stopping female genital mutilation in this country, and will use the full power of the law to ensure that no girls suffer such physical and emotional abuse."

Nagarwala is an emergency department physician at a Detroit hospital and is employed by Henry Ford Health System. She was placed on administrative leave Thursday, Henry Ford Health System announced.

Nagarwala does not work at the Livonia medical clinic where the procedures were performed, according to court documents.

"Female genital mutilation constitutes a particularly brutal form of violence against women and girls," acting U.S. Attorney Daniel Lemisch said. "It is also a serious federal felony in the United States. The practice has no place in modern society, and those who perform FGM on minors will be held accountable under federal law."

Officials said some members of a particular religious and cultural community are known to practice FGM on young girls as part of their religious and cultural practices. Investigators said the practice is performed in an attempt to suppress female sexuality and reduce sexual pleasure and promiscuity.

The federal complaint says Nagarwala is a member of that community.

Another doctor apparently joined in:
Arrested are Dr. Fakhruddin Attar, 53, and his wife, Farida Attar, 50, both of Livonia. According to a criminal complaint unsealed today, Attar owns the medical clinic in Livonia where prosecutors say two Minnesota girls had their genitals mutilated in February by Dr. Jumana Nagarwala, who was charged last week in what is the nation's first federal prosecution of genital cutting. She was arrested April 12 and ordered jailed pending the outcome of her trial.

According to the complaint, Attar and his wife conspired with Nagarwala to bring young girls ages 6-8 to the clinic, where they would undergo genital mutilation procedures when the clinic was closed.
