Police and community members today expressed anger over three recent cases of elderly women being attacked inside their homes.

"We have to stand together with the community and say, 'Enough is enough,'" Detroit Police Interim Chief Ralph Godbee said at a press conference in front of police headquarters.

Godbee said he and residents are full of "righteous indignation" over the three incidents, which happened on consecutive days:

• At about 10 a.m. Saturday, two men broke into the southwest Detroit home of an 84-year-old woman and brutally beat her, detaching her lip and fracturing her eye socket.

• A man and woman broke into a home on Lonyo near McGraw, also in southwest Detroit, at about 2:30 a.m. Friday. The 78-year-old woman who lived there fired shots at the suspects, who fled.

• A 90-year-old woman was raped inside her home on Leslie last Thursday.

Nimrod Sherman, the 90-year-old woman's grandson, said the victim is recovering at another relative's house, "but she's devastated."

"How could someone do that to a 90-year-old woman? Anyone who would do that has no boundaries," said Sherman, who was among a crowd of about 200 people who organized a search for the suspect.

Police took a man into custody Tuesday night after the angry crowd was convinced he had information about sexual assault, and attempted to force him to answer questions.

Godbee said officers were with the citizens as "peacekeepers" and that the man scuffled with police when they attempted to take him in for questioning.

"Criminals don't give up easily," Godbee said. "There's a lot of righteous indignation over this, with both police and citizens. We're not robots; we're part of the community."

Godbee said two guns were confiscated from the man, who was not under arrest, but was being "debriefed," he said.

Ok! Let's go! Time to stop this stuff for good, right? Old people are our future, I mean our past, I mean, don't hurt them anymore!

Oh wait...

Two men who apparently stole a Meals on Wheels truck this morning pretended to offer free food to an elderly Detroit couple before attacking one and driving off with the pair’s car.

The husband and wife, both 73, told police they had just pulled into their driveway on Longfellow near Rosa Parks Boulevard around 10 a.m. when the two men pulled up in the truck and told them they were delivering free meals.

One man went to the passenger side and stole the woman’s purse, while the other hit the husband in the face and knocked him to the ground.

One of the men drove off in the couple’s burgundy Chrysler Sebring, with a license plate of 5JK C66, while the other drove the Meals on Wheels truck. Police said the meal truck was later found abandoned and still running not far from the crime scene.

So we should be expecting a press conference and an assembled mob to round up the perps soon, right? Can't wait.

A thin woman with silver hair and dark-rimmed glasses stood Wednesday evening on her front steps, shattered glass at her feet and crowds of neighbors milling around the block and speaking of her in heroic terms.

Margaret Matthews, 68, said she had been harassed for more than a year by a pair of boys in her South Shore neighborhood. On Tuesday, the boys stood on a shed in her front yard hurling bricks at her. Matthews, exasperated and uncertain whether police would respond, pulled out a gun and shot at them.

Police are seeking tips to find suspects in the assault Sunday of an 85-year-old woman on the city's east side.

The woman was found beaten and bloodied outside her home about 1:30 p.m. in the 1800-block of Jos. Campau, said Sgt. Eren Stephens of the Detroit Police Department.

She was taken to a local hospital, where she was listed in serious condition.

Her home appeared to have been robbed; police are investigating, Stephens said.

Witnesses reported seeing two men raking leaves in her yard earlier, she said.

Sheez-Oh-Pete, what's this world coming to? Back in the Peace-Love days, when me dear granny's hood was getting integrated, the worst thing the bros' ever tried was call her up late at night, and turn on the charm, and try to get laid. Any port in a storm, I guess.

Not to take away from the disgustingness of beating and bloodying a senior, but 1800 campau is the Garden Court apartments, is it not? where would she have been found, in the hallway? The 18000 block of Jos. Campau, now there's a spot for a robbery and a beating.

WDIV had that story. They reported that she agreed to hire two men to rake her yard and when they went to get paid they assaulted and robbed her. The strangest thing was that they actually did a good job on the yard, the picture showed bags of leaves lining the curb, before they went Neanderthal on the woman.

Slate's annual 80 over 80 list is out. John Conyers may not know who is driving the family truckster or how his wife got those bags of cash, but apparently he has it together more than most octogenarians because he is new to the list. Here are our local representatives:

#45 John Dingell (84), down 17 spots from 2009
#57 Jack Kevorkian (82), down 19 spots from 2009
#61 Alfred Taubman (86), up seven spots from 2009
#72 John Conyers (81), new to the list
#80 Helen Thomas (90), down 10 spots from 2009
I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now, what I'm with isn't 'it,' and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.

Police said an 84-year-old man was attacked and beaten Friday night by a young man in Detroit.

Paul McDermott went to check on an elderly woman from his church, police said. He was going to set up her phone so the church could call her and check on her periodically, police said.

When McDermott was leaving the woman's home on Waverly Street between 12th and 14th streets, he was attacked by a young man, police said.

"He kept pounding on my face ... he has me down with his knees, I am helpless," McDermott said. "I just said good morning."

McDermott was getting into his car when the man hit him in the face, police said. McDermott was carrying a gun and when he went to use it the man grabbed the gun, dragged him out of the car, threw him to the ground and stole the car, police said.

McDermott said he refuses to let this attack change his life. He plans to keep helping people in his church.

"I don't live in fear," he said.

McDermott described the attacker as in his 20s or 30s and relatively tall.

Police said McDermott's car has been found, but his gun, which he has a permit for, is still missing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department.

My question is: Will someone get shot over these glasses?

If you wouldn't use a crowbar on Ernie Harwell's face, you shouldn't use one on his statue, either.

Someone pried the glasses from his sculpture at Comerica Park, a theft both brazen and bronzen.

A new pair should be welded into place by Thursday, when the Detroit Tigers play Baltimore in the opener of a seven-game home stand, but please:

Can't we keep our hands and levers to ourselves?

Given his status as both an idol and an artwork, you'd think Harwell would be immune to vandalism.

Several months ago, though, Tigers officials noticed that his familiar oversized spectacles were missing from his kindly metallic face.

They didn't say anything then, and asked what happened, they're not saying much now.

But the artist who oversaw the life-sized reproduction of the larger-than-life broadcaster reports that ultimately, the only thing holding the glasses in place is courtesy.

"We're going to attach them as strongly as possible," says Omri Amrany of the Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt-Amrany in Fort Sheridan, Ill., "but if somebody has a crowbar and a little persuasion, you cannot keep the glasses on anybody. Anything that can break a car can break a statue."

Bugs Bunny. Bugs refers to Elmer Fudd as Nimrod. it was facetious. Apparently no one got the inside/jewish joke Mel Blanc was making and it became a pejorative.
