I haven't watched much of the World Cup, but I think I've seen enough flopping to last a lifetime. Every few minutes, someone lies on the ground writhing like they've been shot from the grassy knoll. Then they show a replay and there is some incidental contact if any contact at all. Once the player gets his call, he pops up and is right back in the game.

It's embarrassing for grown men to act this way. I can't get engaged in the sport until the flopping is reduced.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now, what I'm with isn't 'it,' and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.

They carted that American guy off the field on a stretcher for a hamstring injury. In what other American sport would that happen, short of the athlete's hamstring being physically ripped from their leg?
By using the El Dorado Atmospheric and Oceanic temperatures thermal map. I caculated the contrary direction where the polar jet stream is going and it didn't look pretty.

Near the end of the game when the ball was in the USA end, there was a white shirt laying on the ground while Portugal had the ball. It had to be for at least 10 seconds. He wasn't trying to stop the opponent, he was prone and trying to get a whistle. Then when the USA got control, suddenly he wasn't on the ground any more. Pathetic.

Now that the U.S. is out of the World Cup (and they were very fortunate to make it to extra time after being thoroughly outplayed by Belgium yesterday), we get the obligatory rush of "will soccer take off in the U.S. now?" columns and such. Terry Foster is the latest guilty party.

This isn’t to say soccer is about to explode in this country, but it won’t entirely die down just as it has after past World Cups.

Yes, it will. And that's fine.
Wondering whether soccer will catch fire after the World Cup is like wondering if gymnastics will catch fire after the Olympics. Both events, and others like them, are appointment TV: Casual viewers are drawn in because, hey, it's the World Cup or the Olympics or the Oscars.
The best hope for U.S. Soccer is to keep investing in its developmental program and see as many American players as possible find spots on clubs in the EPL or German, Spanish or Italian leagues. Klinsmann embraces all sorts of styles of play and should have a younger, more athletic team four years from now.
In the meantime, the World Cup has been a helluva show so far. Some of the world's greatest players have done amazing things and the games the rest of the way should be very entertaining. My money's on an Argentina-Brazil final.

Shows what I know ... Germany just destroyed Brazil. Like Bears vs. Patriots in Super Bowl XX destroyed.

Either of tomorrow's semifinalists (Netherlands and Argentina) should give Germany a better game in the final.

And at least Brazil isn't full of hopelessly poor people who just watched their government light oodles of cash on fire to put on this tournament so they'd have an up-close seat to watch their beloved national team get beaten like it stole something. I'm sure everyone will take this well.

Sports Illustrated pretty much destroyed their website.

Specialized bikes, although trying their best to avoid it, has a big marketing issue after their equipment failed under the favorite to win the race yesterday while he was JRA.

Because the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl wasn't quite dumb enough:

The Detroit Lions announced today a multiyear agreement with Ford Motor Company’s Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center designating Quick Lane as title sponsor for the annual bowl game held at Ford Field in Detroit. This year’s game is scheduled for Dec. 26, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. The Quick Lane Bowl will air nationally on ESPN.

College rugby is on TV. They're playing 7 minute halves. I assume that is the norm (no pun intended regarding our resident rugby player)? That seems like an awfully short game.

Went to my first MLS match yesterday. I'm looking forward to going to my second one.

Omar Infante finally got a World Series ring. And he survived the 2003 Detroit Tigers. Good for him.
