Finished "In the Garden of Beasts" last night. Good, not great.
My hand to God, she's gonna be at Carnegie Hall. But you - I'll let you have her now at the old price, OK? Which is, which is anything you wanna give me. Anything at all.

For Military History Buffs, Re-reading "Hell In A Very Small Place" and "A Savage War Of Piece".

I know the French get a lot of grief for WWII, but for a long time they kicked ass and I love the history of the FFl and the Paras.

I am just starting a proof of a pending book from George Galster at Wayne State titled "Driving Detroit".

Galster's work is remarkable. FUIGB would revel in his data intensive "The Maze of Urban Housing Markets"

It appears to be history of the factors driving the social and economic collapse of Detroit though a different lens from "Origins of the Urban Crisis". Other than that I have not asked much, I just know this is the less wonky, more visceral book Galster has wanted to write for some time. He is a rare combination of being able to get dry data across as well as being able to select and convey very compelling vignettes.

Contents
Preface ix
Prologue. Two Daughters of Detroit 1
1. Riding on the Freeway: A Riff on the Place Called Motown 3
2. Sculpting Detroit: Polity and Economy Trump Geology 45
3. From Fort to Ford to . . . ? 69
4. From Old World to Old South and Old Testament 92
5. Who Will Feast on the Fruits of Labor? 109
6. Turf Wars 136
7. Wrestling for Pieces of the Proletarian Pie 167
8. Feasting on Fear 197
9. The Dynamics of Decay, Abandonment, and Bankruptcy 215
10. What Drives Detroiters? 241
11. From Motown to Mortropolis 270
Epilogue. Two Daughters of Detroit Revisited 283

Will report back at end of trip.

Detroit Library's annual book sale continues today. Hardcovers and adult paperbacks are a dollar, except for books on the tables which are $0.25 each.

I went yesterday and got about ten pounds of books for six dollars. The hardcovers appear to be unread, and only one had a Dewey number so I know the rest were never shelved or checked out. My pile included titles by Tom Wolfe, John Grisham, Dean Koontz, Ann Rule, Ted Dreiser, two by James Frey, and something called Ambulance Girl which appears to be a memoir of a chick-medic. Oh, and something by Rush Limbaugh. Hey, it was only two bits. They had that one in a box labelled fiction.

I didn't spend a lot of time there, it followed a double shift and I had to return to work and I also don't do well with browsing shelves, I just don't have the patience or focus for it, and I only scanned maybe half of what was there. Maybe I'll go back today before work, i dunno.

There weren't many people there compared to my experience in past years. I just grabbed what I could carry but those who are serious about it bring a box.

We were there Wednesday night. I was looking for architectural books, and found only one. I did find some automotive books and a couple of books about opera. It was pretty crowded the night I was there.

Ha, ha. Sure, I get it. Never read it or anything by her, but I get the joke. And not too bad, either.

After a point, though, I say fuck you to the shit-slingers who would pile on another because of what they read. Reading a manifesto doesn't have to mean that one takes it as a guidebook for life. General or even esoteric interest, you know.

Books that I intend to read one day for the sake of my education:

Protocols of the Elders of Zion
Turner Diaries
Mein Kampf (only have made it about half-way through, twice)
Koran

Being your a military buff, might I also suggest "Low Level Hell" by Hugh Mills.

I think you are missing Mr. Stickman's implied allegiance to Rand in his word balloon in the first panel.

Have you no critical reading skills? Clearly he adores her. Which makes him have terrible taste.

His lack of attention to detail may explain his affinity for heavy metal, too.
