Veteran journalist Mike Wallace died Saturday evening at the age of 93, CBS announced Sunday morning.

Wallace was on the founding staff of "60 Minutes" and quickly became known for his tough interviews.

He contributed periodically to "60 Minutes" after retiring as a regular correspondent in 2006.

Wallace died at a care facility in New Haven, Conn., Bob Schieffer announced Sunday morning on CBS' "Face the Nation."
