On a semi-vaguely related note: a few weeks ago C-Span was filming John McCain pitching his spchiel at a campaign stop and someone in the audience asked him about Putin. He commented how he met Putin once and looked into his eyes and the only thing he saw were the letters K G B. It was the best line I've heard a pol say in ten years.

A close-knit group of about 25 Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick supporters, including pastors and business leaders, gathered Saturday morning at city hall with the beleaguered mayor for what they described as a prayer session.

Malik Shabazz, leader of the New Black Panthers in Detroit, said the meeting was called Friday night but not related to news that Wayne County Kym Worthy has made up her mind on whether to charge the Kilpatrick with a crime related to the text message scandal that has consumed the city and region for nearly two months.

"We went to pray," Shabazz said. "Our mayor is a praying mayor, he believes in the power of prayer and so do we.

"We were not there asking the mayor to resign. Emphatically no, nor should he resign."

The Rev. Horace Sheffield, pastor of New Galilee Baptist Church in Detroit, was also in attendance.

He said the mayor was in need of support and his backers went to encourage him to stay strong.

"No doubt that no matter how tough you are and how tried you re these kind of times can be very trying," Sheffield said. "To know that we embraced him and continued to pray for him was heartening for him."

The prayer meeting comes a day after U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen approved a review of thousands of text messages -- including those of Kilpatrick -- in a lawsuit stemming from the 2003 shooting death of Tamara Greene, the stripper said to have danced at a never-proven party at the Manoogian Mansion. Rosen also denied a motion to dismiss the case by city lawyers.

Sheffield said the meeting was not related to Worthy’s investigation or Rosen’s ruling. Worthy said Friday she has made her deciaion about whether to charge Kilpatrick in the text message scandal, but would not reveal details.

"This was purely a group meeting where someone wanted to sit a room with people who have been supportive of him," Sheffield said, adding he did not know who called the meeting.

Shabazz said the prayer session began at 10 a.m. and lasted about two hours.

Others in attendance included: Kilpatrick's chief of staff Kandia Milton and local union leaders Willie Hampton and Jimmy Settles.

Worthy's probe stems from a Free Press report in January that revealed that text messages between Kilpatrick and then-chief of staff Christine Beatty showed the pair lied at a police whistle-blower trial last summer when they testified they were not romantically involved. The trial and subsequent settlement of two police lawsuits, cost taxpayers more than $9 million.

A Free Press report Sunday revealed that other text messages raised questions about whether a friend of Kilpatrick and Beatty received favoritism in the awarding of city contracts.

On the same day the Detroit City Council called for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's resignation, the mayor reached out Tuesday to other powerful community stakeholders, including business leaders, elected officials and clergy members.

Kilpatrick started his day at 7 a.m. at the Detroit Athletic Club, where he touted the city's economic stimulus package for major investors in the city. An hour later, he met with a tight-knit group of his political allies, including state Rep. Bert Johnson of Highland Park, former state Rep. Bill McConico and Art Blackwell, a former Wayne County commissioner and financial manager for Highland Park.

"For many of us who have known the mayor for a long time, we wanted to see how he was doing," said Blackwell, who insisted that Kilpatrick continues to move the city forward. "I wanted to see if he was strong and resolved, and he is."

Around noon, Kilpatrick arrived at Corinthian Baptist Church in Hamtramck, where the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity gathered for its monthly meeting. The mayor spent some time in the Rev. Joseph Jordan's study, where he chatted with some of the council leaders.

He then went next door for what sounded like a pep rally.

Kilpatrick was greeted by about 200 parolees. They offered hugs, handshakes and cries of "We love you" and "We all make mistakes." They were at the church as part of a re-entry-to-society program for former prisoners.

The mayor thanked them for the warm welcome, saying he needed to feel the love.

"When everything is going good, sometimes we forget about God," he said. "I was being disobedient to God. ... I've had a spiritual transformation of my own over the past few months. God whipped me. I needed it, and now I'm ready to move away from it."

The Rev. Norflette Mersier, pastor of Christian Temple Baptist Church, said he supports the mayor and wants to see the scandal put to rest.

"He who is without sin let him cast the first stone," said Mersier, 85. "I feel that Kwame has done a good job and we all make mistakes."

The Rev. Kenneth Flowers, pastor of the Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, said he has respect for the mayor, but is concerned he is harming the city and its residents.

"I have no animosity, but I think he needs to pray about this and ask God to direct him," Flowers said. "Then he has to ask himself if it's worth putting his city through this situation and his family through it. There's a cloud of suspicion and a cloud of doubt.

"The mayor as a person should be forgiven because all of us have shortcomings. On the flip side, when you're in a position of leadership you then have to look at what's best for the position, not the person."

After addressing the parolees, Kilpatrick slipped into a pew in the church's sanctuary and listened to the business of the council, which was intermingled with some impromptu preaching. He did not address the council or its members, and was not on the agenda to do so, said the Rev. Oscar King III, the body's president.

Before acknowledging Kilpatrick, King asked the crowd to "leave your politics at home, and pray for him and with him."

"We are not here to condemn or to condone," King said. "We are here to pray, and the mayor of Detroit is certainly welcome in this church."
