I will never understand the psychology of working poor parishioners supporting these people in these lifestyles. I can almost understand the old lady sending pat robertson her social security check, because she doesn't see him every day...she sees that nice man on the TV and he needs to run that studio so he can preach the good work of the lord. It's still stupid, but it's not like his grifting is right there in her face. I think it's just weird that people will see and interact on a regular, if not daily basis, with a preacher who's car costs more than everything they've ever owned, will own, or hope to own in their lifetimes and only has that car because a THEY gave him the money...and they can't make their rent. it just boggles the mind.

They just had a couple of these "bishops" on The Nine and they were defending their right to be "prosperous" even if the community around them is suffering. It's "God's will".
I guess they were on Let it Rip last night, but I can't bring myself to watch it

Amend to "Organized religion and partisan politics are crutches for weak minded people" and you may be on to something.

It's all about who controls the narrative.

Years ago, I had a douchebag boss who would randomly (or not so randomly) designate a subordinate to be his 'whipping boy'. Then he would proceed to make life hell for that person- shitty evaluations, unwarranted discipline, daily berating in front of peers, etc. He did this because he thought it was an effective way to manage, but more so because he got off on having a little bit of power over people. Careers were destroyed, families were impacted, smart people (if they were lucky) left for new jobs, and until some lawsuits returned with real damages, upper management could not have been more indifferent to the situation. As far as they were concerned, psychoboss "was a hard charger who demanded accountability" (exact words).

Eventually his terror tactics caught up with him, sorta (instead of getting canned or demoted he got shuffled to a different office), but not for a long time, like several years. In the end, all that was left was a pile of ash. The damage done still lingers to this day.

How did he get away with it for so long? Because he controlled the narrative:

-He was extremely passionate about his position and motivated by the power it brought him (he got alot of mileage out of this....)
-His subordinates were reluctant to take a stand because he had power over them, because they didn't want to be targeted, because they knew upper management was on his side.
-His superiors believed the bullshit he was feeding them.
-The power structure was set up to protect the power structure, not the people at the bottom.

The Preachers of Detroit:

-They stand before their congregations, elevated on a stage, in fancy clothing, voices amplified, at the top of their power structure.
-They have important sounding titles, like "Bishop", "Reverend", and "Pastor".
-They are considered men and women of God, holy people, the chosen ones.
-They interpret the word of God, which no one dares to question.
-They are extremely passionate about their positions and motivated by the power it brings.
-The people in the congregation know about the opulent lifestyle but have no problem funding it, because....

....it's all about who controls the narrative.

The Preachers of Detroit

My working hypothesis here is that these guys are a holdover from the days when black America was marginalized & without many opportunities for upward mobility. I'm channeling James Baldwin and "Go Tell it on the Mountain" a bit when I say that the preachers discussed here are living anachronisms, thriving atop the reflexive deference and tithing of a people who missed most of the memos of the past 40 years.

Well, that's at least clearer. They vote R because the Ds are just a bunch of immigrant, commie, MOOslum, faggot and nigra loving 'Merica haterz. If the southern branch of better half's family are any guide-- unemployment or food stamps or medicaid given to a rural white family is a "hand up".... given to urban blacks, it's a "hand out". King HUSSEIN Obummer wants to give more handouts to those lazy blacks and to illegals at the expense of the "hands up" to those hard working, god fearing white folk that just find themselves going through some hard times. The often repeated rebuke is .."how'd Detroit do with the War on Poverty!?!" It's those lazy blacks using the safety net as a hammock....blah blah blah. Nobody sees past the racial stuff to the policy issues.

You realize that there's an equally myopic talk-track for the hoi polloi tier of the Democratic party's base, right?

Higgs may not. I don't know him so I am not making any judgements, but sometimes it's hard to look both ways.

Sure... but I was responding to the comment about the working poor in the south voting against their interests (which I took to be economic interests) by voting R. Surveys are pretty clear on the point that poor people are more likely to vote for dems, but poor whites are not. when you see the very white, very Red, and relatively poor electorate in places like Arkansas vote to raise in the minimum wage and then in the same election elect Rs that reject the minimum wage entirely (and in 2012 go 20 points in favor or Romney) it's pretty clear what the motivations are in voting R and they aren't economic.

Now, of course all those poor dems voted for a Clinton that gave us NAFTA, the repeal of Glass Stegal, and the current regime that has been ...well, a mixed bag. So, yeah, I get the point about perspective. but again, the comment was about the poors in the south voting R.

I hear ya, I try to be aware of the idiocy that can occur on all sides. But most people like to pick one or the other and run fell steam head on with it, damn the torpedoes.
