It's all about who controls the narrative.
Years ago, I had a douchebag boss who would randomly (or not so randomly) designate a subordinate to be his 'whipping boy'. Then he would proceed to make life hell for that person- shitty evaluations, unwarranted discipline, daily berating in front of peers, etc. He did this because he thought it was an effective way to manage, but more so because he got off on having a little bit of power over people. Careers were destroyed, families were impacted, smart people (if they were lucky) left for new jobs, and until some lawsuits returned with real damages, upper management could not have been more indifferent to the situation. As far as they were concerned, psychoboss "was a hard charger who demanded accountability" (exact words).
Eventually his terror tactics caught up with him, sorta (instead of getting canned or demoted he got shuffled to a different office), but not for a long time, like several years. In the end, all that was left was a pile of ash. The damage done still lingers to this day.
How did he get away with it for so long? Because he controlled the narrative:
-He was extremely passionate about his position and motivated by the power it brought him (he got alot of mileage out of this....)
-His subordinates were reluctant to take a stand because he had power over them, because they didn't want to be targeted, because they knew upper management was on his side.
-His superiors believed the bullshit he was feeding them.
-The power structure was set up to protect the power structure, not the people at the bottom.
The Preachers of Detroit:
-They stand before their congregations, elevated on a stage, in fancy clothing, voices amplified, at the top of their power structure.
-They have important sounding titles, like "Bishop", "Reverend", and "Pastor".
-They are considered men and women of God, holy people, the chosen ones.
-They interpret the word of God, which no one dares to question.
-They are extremely passionate about their positions and motivated by the power it brings.
-The people in the congregation know about the opulent lifestyle but have no problem funding it, because....
....it's all about who controls the narrative.
