I’m moving to Detroit this spring as well with my fiancé. I’ll be attending architecture school while he either transfers his job or finds a new one. I’ve done tons and tons of research on the city and it excites me that the “American Dream” is actually a reality in Detroit. I really want to be part of a city that I can help.

I’ll be going to visit Detroit in about two weeks to check out Univ of Detroit and go house hunting. I will let you know what my thoughts are after my visit since we are in the same boat.

I find that the hardest part about telling friends and family I’m moving to Detroit is trying to persuade them that Detroit has so much potential for growth. I’m from RI but did my undergraduate studies in Salt Lake City and it seems as though all everyone has heard about is the dangers of Detroit. I’m not sure if everyone else agrees but it seems as though many of the big publications are always talking poorly about Detroit and it really annoys me.

Young man, if you think you're annoyed now, just wait until you're living your Amercian Dream here only to have your car broken into three times in one month.

Nice things about Detroit?
Hmm, the air is no longer a greyish yellow color and you can see the sky most days
The water won't burn you skin if you put your feet in the river
There are more freeways than traffic

There are lots of "fixer-uppers" (100,000 and growing).
And lots of retail frontage space on main drags like Fort Street, Warren Ave, and Mack Ave.
Very active network of dog fighting clubs and affecianados.
The soon-to-occur opportunity to witness firsthand the historic dismantling of Detroit as soon EFM is appointed.
Abundant adventures await those who enjoy living in an urban frontier where most rules don't apply and the ones that do are all messed up (i.e- thug rules).
Daily crazy shit like manhole covers shooting into the air or bums openly pinching a midday loaf in our many parks and alleyways.

Whenever a chain restraurant or retail giant proposes a store here, people go nuts, both for and against. Everywhere else they just quietly open.

Not just banks and jewelry stores have to buzz in their customers. Plain old retail does it too.

Your credit cards mean nothing in Mexican Village.

When a dog gets hit on a Detroit freeway, it stays there until picked apart by ravens or a semi flattens it into road pizza.

>When Banksy tags a city, his graffiti gets the protection of a holy shrine. In Detroit, within two days it gets sand blasted or destroyed with a hammer.

>Our signature clothing line, Made in Detroit, is not made in Detroit.

>All the famous people who say they are Detroiters do not live in Detroit. Most haven't lived in Detroit in a long time, if ever.

>Panhandlers need a license in Detroit. More are issued by the city per year than new business licenses.

Wildgame dinners are possible without a long drive to the country.

Colorful vagrants and derelicts can regale children with amazing tales and knowledge.
Your family won't be burdened with knowing who killed you.
No shirt, no shoes? No problem!
Fewer new AIDS cases than Johannesburg.
My hand to God, she's gonna be at Carnegie Hall. But you - I'll let you have her now at the old price, OK? Which is, which is anything you wanna give me. Anything at all.

The best fishin is the outlets of Rouge River and Ecorse Creek. Fish grow quick gobbling on fresh waste and theres lots to gobble on there.

My favorite movies made in Detroit are Beverly Hills Cop III, Hardcore Pawn, and the Blues Brothers.

Bar be cue means different things to diffrent people here. Like "how about we eat some bar be cue" or "Ol' Roy got bar be cued when he spliced into the power line behind his house. "

Best selection of fast food anywhere. Mcdonalds, Burger King, Churches, KFC, Popeyes, White Castle, mmmmm good.

For the most part, you don't have to deal with the pick 'em up truck drivers described by Frank in the Learn to Drive thread. They won't enter the city limits.

At least it's not Capac.
Just another run of the mill suburban white devil, with an "Assault" weapon. Molon Labe.

Actually, that's pretty good. Short of a Wing's game or a dope run, that is.

Well, OK...

-No suburban party store has Detroit's selection of hot-flavored snacks in single-serving packages.
-No suburban community accepts that a single serving of a hot-flavored snack passes for breakfast or as the only item in a child's brownbag lunch.
-That naked statue is still outside of the Gas Building.

No other city can top Detroit's selection of loose cigarettes.

Not to mention its wide array of flavored cigars.
