Flint man sought over allegedly firing shotgun in family fight

An arrest warrant has been issued for a 21-year-old Flint man who allegedly fired a sawed-off shotgun over the head of a Genesee County Sheriff's Department investigator as family members fought at a house Sunday afternoon.
The suspect, Ronald E. McKnight, has been charged in a warrant with possession of a short-barrelled shotgun, reckless discharge of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

McKnight was at the scene of a large family fight where a 45-year-old woman died of natural causes at 425 E. Holbrook in Flint Sunday afternoon.

As relatives were arguing and removing items from the woman's house, a county sheriff's investigator who also is a medical examiner's investigator was trying to break up a fight in which woman had pulled a knife and a man was about to throw or hit her with a brick.

At that point, McKnight is alleged to have pulled the shotgun and fired over the heads of the crowd. He then fled.

The investigator pursued McKnight and notified Flint police, but McKnight escaped.
The warrant formally charging him in the shooting incident was issued this morning.

A Mt. Morris Township man who for years avoided trial on charges of raping a woman because he was considered mentally incompetent is finally going to prison.

Torrey M. Cordell, 33, who authorities said raped a 22-year-old woman in September 2000 and then gave her the number for his pager, must serve a minimum of 10 years and five months in prison, Genesee Circuit Judge Richard Yuille ordered Monday.

Cordell's sentencing ends one of the stranger cases in local courts in recent years. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton previously called the case "highly unusual."...

Somerset man a victim of beating – and mistaken identity

SOMERSET — A borough woman is behind bars after being arrested for allegedly taking a Somerset man to an isolated Bakersville area location, where he was severely beaten, tied and threatened with death.

But victim Wallace Jenkins wasn’t the man the attackers were looking for.

Tyra Michelle Taylor, 22, of Village Way, is charged with unlawfully restraining and kidnapping Jenkins, of Somerset, and with criminal conspiracy to commit simple assault, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats.

On Sunday, Taylor arranged to pick up Jenkins at a parking lot near his residence and drive down Route 31 about 11 p.m., according to a state police affidavit of probable cause.

Taylor and an unidentified white woman picked Jenkins up and the three drove to a home in the Bakersville area, Jenkins told police.

There, Jenkins said he was attacked and struck repeatedly by four black men and three white men, all unknown to him.

Jenkins was able to escape momentarily but was captured again, bound with tape and beaten for several hours until the men realized Jenkins wasn’t the person they were looking for – someone involved in stolen money, police said.

After the attack, which police said left Jenkins with lacerations, abrasions and bruising, he was dropped off along a road, where a motorist picked him up. He was treated and later released from Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown.

Taylor was arraigned late Wednesday before on-call District Judge Douglas Bell in Meyersdale and taken to the Somerset County Jail after failing to post $20,000 bail. Her preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday before District Judge Arthur Cook in Somerset.

Jenkins could not be reached for comment.

Detroit police said about 100 people were involved in a fight Tuesday at a funeral home on the city's northwest side.

Detroit police Lieutenant Rita Serra said the deceased was allegedly a murder victim, and that the family of the victim believed someone responsible for his death had shown up to the funeral -- which was being held at Trinity Chapel Funeral Home off Mcnichols Road.

Serra said family members decided to "administer their own justice" and four or five fights broke out inside and out of the chapel.

Bad manners = showing up to the funeral of someone you may have killed.

What I am about to describe didn't take place in the ghetto, but is still ghetto.

So I am an unintentional landlord of a rental house, a souvenir from when the housing market shit itself. We tried selling the place two years ago, had 15 showings, but for whatever reason, the market resisted. I've since rented it out, to two tenants. The first guy was pretty responsible, and while his cat did claw away at a corner of the living room carpet and evidently (based on the smell) pissed in the kitchen a few times, at least he paid his rent on-time and gave some effort into cleaning the place when he left.

Not the case with tenant #2, a young unmarried couple who, with six months remaining on the lease, have broken up and abruptly vacated the premises. Not without leaving their mark, however. Left behind, for me to deal with, is whatever junk they didn't want to move, like an old tv set, dining room table, weight bench, dead plants, trash, etc. Left behind, for me to deal with, is a filthy house they made no effort at cleaning. And left behind, for me to deal with, are the damages, mainly a broken window and the damage to original (65 year old) wood trim from a 100 pound dog, which they decided to get despite conversations where it was made explicitly clear that no big dogs were allowed, and despite a lease which explicitly stated such as well.

But they're out before more serious damage could occur, so I guess that's the good thing. I'll now take precious vacation time and in a couple of weeks the place will be sparkling again and we'll list it again with a realtor, and hope the market has improved like the radio ads claim. Lessons learned: one, I do not have the right disposition to be a landlord. Basically, you have to be a pain in the ass personality- someone knocking on the tenant's door weekly, making sure they are not destroying your shit or violating obligations of the lease. Second lesson: there truly is a "rental class" of society- that segment who will never own a house not because they don't make very much, but because they are irresponsible with their money and their credit is shot. These are the slobs who will always rent, and they couldn't care less that someone owns it. Now that's pure ghetto.

Many people are hopeless. Saying so runs counter to what I want from society (e.g. save everyone; all buy into the a social contract predicated upon decency and comity; etc.) but the truth is undeniable. I'm not sure why but I've been hearing and reading more about extending "second chances" to wrong-doers, as in 'anyone can make a mistake so why penalize for life one with a transgression?" Sounds reasonable, to a point, or at least it sets up those who would disagree to come across as unreasonable. But my personal heartburn kicks in when the guilty are not held fully accountable for making right their wrongs, and the woes of the victim are tritely dismissed as "the cost of doing business." The injustice in Vlad's experience is that a pair of pigs used and abused the property of another beyond what they paid, and then the property owner takes it in the shorts to make things right. Sucks.

"Debtors' prison" brings to mind thoughts and images of unnecessarily harsh justice, but I'll admit that at times the concept has some appeal. In Vlad's case there are two who fucked over a man and now likely are flouncing off to bring hell to the lives of others, and like children with muddy boots they'll unnecessarily track filth all over someone else and then someone else and so on without ever having to make things right. Pisses me off and it brings to mind an uncollected debt: almost 23 years ago I had a car stolen off of the street around UofD. The car was recovered with occupants by a booster car, but it was damaged: shredded steering column, punched trunk, mashed front bumper. Because the ride was still prime ghetto hooptie material ('78 Cutlass) I was able to sell it and get something but I was still out probably a grand due to the damage. The young guy that they convicted got jail time and then was to pay me $700 or 800 in restitution. I've never seen a dime. Honestly, I'd forgotten about this until reading Vlad's post and it got me to thinking about how decent people get shat upon by garbage. So, I dunno, doing away with currency and requiring all to use a card or implanted chip for all financial transactions might make it impossible for the irresponsible to continue as such and thereby allow the aggrieved to be made whole.

You could always go after his estate. Maybe he had $700 in his inmate account earned working in the prison laundry?

I got my pound of flesh. Cannot say that I really wanted the guy dead, but he needed to atone for his crime as well as make me, the victim, whole. I am settling for him living a miserable life, locked up, listening to the din and smelling the smells every dang day while I had a good life. I don't keep a diary so I don't know exactly what I was doing on that day, but a Saturday in June probably saw me in the garden in the backyard or in the driveway planing boards, and then spending the evening on the front porch relaxing with a cool beverage and talking with family and neighbors. Meanwhile, Buchannan was busy getting shanked
