What Rush has going for him is that he's on the radio. Radio makes everything more palatable for me because its usually consumed in the car during a long commute. I don't care who you are: drive long enough and it gets lonely, and so even pundits are in a sense welcome if they're on AM. For this reason I've listened to more Art Blackwell and even Revered Al than I care to admit. Put the same guys on TV when I'm home with a million other things to entertain me, and these guys can all go to hell.

Colbert ate shit, too. Not much use for the smug self-affected intellectual. Like Stewart he wasn't nearly as smart as he believed himself to be.

Not much of a radio guy, haven't been since I came home from my first semester away and found WABX went corporate, but lately I've been leaving it on at very low volume in my office/computer room/cave. It's on WDET, at an almost subliminal volume, but what's obvious pretty quick is that it's the same thing repeated all day long. Whatever they're talking about in the morning goes into a loop and is repeated. Later on they play music, but a there are a handful of songs that they play every night - the one with a woman softly saying "puff...daddy", the mix that samples Jimi Hendrix singing, a new age version of Neil Young's Harvest Moon, the song that goes "you've been so good to me/i give you everything" - they hit each one in every broadcast.

So they started the pledge drive. Uh, sorry, gotta go. Next signal down was a metal station. Some good songs, but more weighted to execrable crap. Next.

Next is Canada's Cool FM. Hits from, I dunno, the 80s and 90s. Some of it's good, almost all of it is at least listenable. So the thing is, they're pulling songs from a twenty or thirty year time period, but even with that I've noticed repeats in just a day. I was off work yesterday, heard what they were doing through the day, and now tonight when I came home from the mine I heard two of the same songs I heard yesterday within about twenty minutes of getting home - the song about finding her number on the wall and Prince's 1999. Are these songs you'd even want to hear that often? There's better stuff out there, or I figure there has to at least be more of it to where you don't have to repeat things in 24 hours.

I've been into podcasts lately. The vast majority of them are free to download, and there's a lot to choose from.

Most comedians have started one just so they can get more people out to their live shows. Bill Burr is too pro New England for me when talking about football, but is otherwise pretty funny. Joe Rogan can be pretty good, depending on the quality of the guest. Adam Carolla does a daily podcast that's a bit like your morning drive show, but I wish the show had less L.A. references. Nick Di Paolo is able to add some viable humor to rightwing talk.

I've been thinking of ways to get onto this bandwagon. There's lots on NPR that could fill voids: when I'm out for a walk or working in the garage. Mornings for me are just fine, thanks, with XM and the daily drivers of Opie (70/30 listenable/garbage) Terry Gross, and a half-dozen cable news and biz channels that are simulcast. It's those other moments when my own music collection feels a little stale and terrestrial radio still just blows...

I'll give broadcast radio a try every so often and in short order I remember why I turned it off: goddamn repetition. Think about it for a minute: how many times in your life have you heard AC/DC's For Those About to Rock, or the Eagles Long Run? They're both good songs, but if they went unplayed for 20 years then, maybe then, hearing them once more would be OK. But crap, the odds are good that you'll hear both of these every day or so.

Drew Lane out at Detroit Sports

Is anyone surprised by this? The Drew and Marc show has been practically unlistenable since it started.

Drew was never a fit for sports talk, and 105.1 management had to know that. But they must've figured his name would pull big numbers, which obviously is not what happened.

It'd be nice to think that come January, the ol' gang might reunite, a re-dux Drew and Mike Show morning drive at one of the other stations. I don't see it happening though, for many reasons, the biggest being there's lingering bad blood between the two. If you listened to Drew and Marc it would sometimes surface, veiled and subtle, but without question.

My prediction is both Drew and Mike are done in this town, and hopefully they bought enough Apple stock in 1995 that retirement is a viable option.

So we have what we have. Dave and Chuck are low and common (I don't care what the ratings are). The options are thin. Thankfully there is satellite radio. Howard Stern better not retire soon.

Mrs. D listens to Dave and Chuck to pass the time while jogging, but she's not a middle aged man pining for the fart jokes of yore. Maybe they have new fart jokes, I don't know, never listened.

I heard him talk about this, but figured he was just complaining to complain (can you eat any better, Mr. Stern?). Then I read he's worth half a billion dollars, which means he's working for no real reason anymore. He's also been grousing recently about wanting more free time to paint, do his photography, entertain, etc. So maybe this is the end of his run too. Who's next in line? No one, which sucks. No one else can interview like that guy.
