But I think about the arsenal of homemade jigs that I use with the table saw, band saw, etc. and wonder: where is the line between safety and paranoia? I don't have the skill to anticipate dangers with a lathe, but in time... maybe.

In poking around on the web I've found references to guys making their own equipment, e.g. http://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/showthread.php?t=27314

The difference between a life-long turner and a clown from Detroit are probably inumerable, but still, there it is: guys making and using homespun equipment. In the end I'll probably just spend the 20 bucks to get the basic equipment and then see where it goes.

Don't listen to the haters Frank. You go with your bad self. Besides, the herd needs culling anyways. Big difference between saws and lathes, but if you're not grasping why lathes are inherently more dangerous, then... Oh hell, who am I kidding? Go spin away. See you on the other side.

Been working at hand-planing smooth a butcher block top for a workbench that I'm making. Pics didn't come out so you'll have to take my word for it today, but things are looking very good considering that I'm having to learn as a I go.

Just finished mounting the center channel for our home theater setup. I already had the corner speakers up, and decided to finally put the center up. It was on the fireplace mantle. Now it's above the fireplace with all wires running behind the drywall. It was a PITA because I couldn't go straight down, I had to go laterally (through three studs) three feet before I could run it down to the basement, so there's some painting to do, too. All wires are hidden. The only thing left to do is to run the HDMI and TV power and I'll have all my wires hidden. That will be easy

Watched Gravity on it. Wow is all I can say. Just like being in the theater

I'm sure it's a day late but if you put conduit in, it will make it much, much easier to replace and upgrade cables when you inevitably have to.
By using the El Dorado Atmospheric and Oceanic temperatures thermal map. I caculated the contrary direction where the polar jet stream is going and it didn't look pretty.

Well, not really a, "D'oh!!". The only thing I have run so far are the speakers and those won't need to be upgraded anytime soon (I used 14 ga. speaker wire). All of the cables for the TV are still exposed., That's next on the list, but I don't see how running conduit will make a difference? The cables and power sit between the same two studs as one of the speaker, so the holes in the basement already exist and a 12 ft HDMI cable will go behind the wall to the basement and back up to the media cabinet

Do tell.......

I don't know what all you're doing but conduit would help make it easier if an RCA A/V cable goes bad and needs replaced or new technology comes out and you want to upgrade to a new standard. HDMI cables go bad, too. Since you're doing a straight shot down to the basement you probably won't be able to benefit very much from it but if you needed to across studs and then downstairs, it would be more of a benefit.

That makes sense.

Yep....all the TV cables are a straight shot downstairs and everything is a straight shot to back up to five gang electrical box that holds all of the speaker connections for the home theater, speaker connections for the back porch the HDMI, and DSL line. In fact, the only thing that isn't straight downstairs is the center channel and that's because the fireplace is below it

Next step is to run the HDMI and the TV power behind the wall......like I said that will be easy because those holes already exist

That's a good deal. I paid $350 from a pawn shop in Middletown for the amp and a Peavey 4x12 cabinet. I love mine, as well. Amazing how well these things hold up after 35 years.........

This is what it runs

I run mine through a Carvin 2x10 and 1x15 cabs. I got it so cheap because it looked like an eight year old went ape on the face with sharpies, nail polish and stickers. I was able to clean it up real nice, and it still has the "Hewitt's Music" brass plaque nailed to the top. Next time I'm on that side of the basement I'll shoot a pic. Wish I had gotten some "before" shots...
