I just don't get (nor will I ever) hockey in the warmer climes. The teams do good attendance-wise for a while, then it drops off, unless they make a playoff push, and even then the increase isn't the same as in traditional markets. I'd be happy to see the league contract. Get rid of all "warm" market teams (and yes, I'd even include L.A. in that).

But then again, I'm a traditionalist. Get rid of those teams, bring back Quebec, maybe add another Canadian team to replace Dallas or Phoenix.

Hamilton has been trying to get a team for decades, haven't they?

Yes, it has, behind the money of Jim Bassile (sp?), the Blackberry guy. That move will happen over the Maple Leafs' and Sabres' dead bodies.

LA, Anaheim, San Jose, Dallas, Nashville and Carolina are markets that have ample corporate money and, in most cases, a decent fan base to keep things humming along.

If they're going to start eliminating teams, Tampa and Florida would be the best place to start. Forget moving to Quebec (Ottawa has hardly been a smashing success, BTW) and just cut down to 28 teams and realign to four seven-team divisions.

Has any pro sports franchise been contracted in our lifetimes? I can't think of any offhand.

I don't know if this is contraction, but in 1976 the Cleveland Barons merged with the existing Minnesota North Stars and, poof, no more Barons. Minnesota who had sucked until that point, still sucked after the merger

Other than the example D-Day cited, I don't think so, at least not in the big four professional leagues.
The ABA and WHA folded a bunch of franchises when they merged with the NBA and NHL.

Marty Brodeur is now a Blue, for at least the rest of the season.

So let me get this straight. Marty practically begs any NHL team to sign him, the Blues do, he knows he's not going to be their #1, the regular backup comes back, and now he's "mulling his future"?

OK got it. What the fuck did he expect?

Brian Elliott is on my fantasy team, so ... don't let the door hit ya Marty.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now, what I'm with isn't 'it,' and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.

Watched the documentary "Of Miracles and Men" on Netflix. It tells the 1980 Olympic hockey story from the Soviet perspective. Slava Fetisov is prominently featured -- he makes a return trip to Lake Placid with this daughter. Enthusiastic thumbs-up.

For a while there, it looked like the Wings and Mrazek might hold on and win tonight. Oh well ...

They're going to make the playoffs and, unless he really melts down, it looks like Mrazek will be the starter. Whomever they play, I'll be surprised if they win two games in the series.

Once they check out, I'm rooting for the Habs.

Agreed. The way they limped in doesn't bode well.

Blues once the Wings are out.

On a positive note, the Lightning is a better matchup than Montreal. On the other, Mrazek is likely to shut a team out one night, then give up three goals on nine shots the next.

Well, they pulled the first one off. Sick shorthander by Glendening.
