Selig: Reds can have Pete Rose in All-Star festivities
C. Trent Rosecrans, [email protected] 3:20 p.m. EDT July 15, 2014

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Reds will be allowed to include Pete Rose in All-Star Game festivities next season, even if it is on a limited basis, commissioner Bud Selig said Tuesday.

Speaking exclusively to the Baseball Writers Association of America on Tuesday, baseball's outgoing commissioner was asked if Rose would be allowed to be included in All-Star celebrations next year when Cincinnati hosts the game.

"That'll be up to the Cincinnati club, and they know what they can do and they can't do," Selig said. "They've been very good about that. We haven't had that discussion."

Rose: I didn't alter baseball statistics

Rose, banned from baseball in 1989, has been officially recognized twice at Great American Ball Park -- in 2010 on the 25th anniversary of his record-breaking 4,192nd hit and last season at the dedication of the statue of Big Red Machine teammate Joe Morgan, when the entire "Great Eight" was honored.

Selig would not answer a question about specific guidelines the Reds would have to follow.

"It's sort of subjective, they've done some things with Pete, but they've been very, very thoughtful and limited," Selig said. "That's a subject that I'm sure they'll discuss in the next year. They're all here, but that's not a subject that's come up."

As for Rose's overall status with Selig, who is scheduled to step aside at the end of the year, the commissioner said there has been no change in Rose's status.

"It's a matter under advisement. That's my standard line," Selig said. "I'm the judge and that's where it'll stay. There's nothing new."

However, the role of Rose becomes a bigger issue with the All-Star Game coming to Cincinnati in 2015.

Every All-Star Game is a celebration of not just Major League Baseball, but baseball's history in the host city. Here in Minneapolis, many former Twins -- the likes of Tony Oliva and Frank Viola -- to native Minnesotans like Dave Winfield and Jack Morris -- have been part of festivities, from throwing out first pitches, to autograph signings and appearances. Two years ago in Kansas City, Royals legend George Brett was a spokesman for the city and the All-Star Game following the final out of the 2011 All-Star Game in Arizona.

How do you tell the story of baseball in Cincinnati or the story of the Cincinnati Reds without Rose?

"You don't," Reds owner Bob Castellini told The Enquirer on Tuesday.

"We plan on using him wherever Major League Baseball is comfortable with, but we're certainly going to include him," Castellini said.

So....WTF. Is he still banned or is Selig trying (again) to have it both ways?
Where the hell am I going? And what the hell am I doing in this handbasket?

Pete Rose has requested his ban be lifted, commissioner Manfred says

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Baseball hit king Pete Rose requested to have his ban from the game lifted, new MLB commissioner Rob Manfred revealed Monday.

“I do have a formal request from Pete. I will be in communications with his representatives,” Manfred said at a Q&A with Dodgers writers and a couple of others here.

“I'm prepared to deal with that request on its merits,” Manfred also said.

Rose was suspended for betting on baseball by commissioner Bart Giamatti in 1989, and his occasional requests of commissioner Bud Selig to be allowed back into the game were not approved, but Rose may see a potential opening for reinstatement with Manfred's appointment in January.

Selig was very close to Giamati, though it's not known how that relationship affected Selig's thinking on the matter. Manfred, a protege of Selig, has not signaled which way he may lean on the issue, if any.

Manfred said he would like to take time to review the paperwork of Giamatti and investigator John Dowd, who filed the report on Rose's betting for MLB. Rose denied for many years that he had bet on baseball, but eventually admitted he bet on baseball, and his own Reds team, while managing the Reds.

Manfred said he has received no lobbying from the Hall of Fame regarding Rose. The presumption is that he'd be allowed on the Hall of Fame ballot if he were to be readmitted to the game.

There seems to be a fair amount of public sympathy for Rose, the all-time hits leader who's paid a steep price for his transgressions.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he didn't want to weigh in on the ultimate decision, saying, “I'm not going to get into all the politics. I just think Pete's a great player.” Mattingly obviously likes Rose. He recalled him advising the young Mattingly, "Two hundred hits a year, kid. Just get 200 hits a year."

Mattingly suggested it wasn't his place to say how he felt about a Rose reinstatement, but there seemed to be just a hint of sympathy from something Mattingly said. Though he made clear he didn't want to say what he thinks Manfred should do, Mattingly said,“I think there's going to come a time where we all kinda move on.”

Ideally, the unintended (or perhaps intended) consequence would be a willingness to induct PED-era players like Bonds, Clemens and A-Rod who, like Rose, broke the rules (though the PED 'rules' never were clear) but still made significant impacts as players.
Pete Rose is a dirtbag who looks like an old kiddie diddler, but, like many have said, the guy still had the most hits of all time.
My hand to God, she's gonna be at Carnegie Hall. But you - I'll let you have her now at the old price, OK? Which is, which is anything you wanna give me. Anything at all.

I agree with you that he's a dirtbag....but, yea,. he has the mots hits of all time. Another thing, I think, is that it's never been proven that he bet one the Reds to lose. Had he done that, I tn lifetime ban with no hope of parole. No question. This has cost him untold millions and reduced him to local furniture commercials and reality shows. He's paid enough, I think. I am wondering if the All-Star game being here this summer has anything to do with this?
