I'm willing to believe Paterno balked at reporting Sandusky to the police because it would destroy a reputation and good name he spent 50 years building. Selfish? Absolutely, but not evil. Humans are, after all, naturally selfish creatures.
The AD and president were protecting a brand, one that made the university (and themselves) wealthy. It makes them no different than any other asshole who lies or looks the other way to cover his own ass or, worse, protect his employer or job.
Here's what will happen next:
The first scent of a winning season at Penn State will draw scads of "healing" stories and the Penn State "family" will drone on and on about how football is helping them put this ugliness behind them, like the good little corn-fed clueless midwesterners they are.
If all this happened at Tulsa or Southern Mississippi, the homecoming game would feature soccer players this fall.
