There was a gentleman in the bar this Saturday who went to PSU to play football during JoPa's first year ('66). He was really emotional about the whole thing and says it's a shame that this has to mar the career of a man who gave him a shot at getting a college education while playing a sport he loved. I tend to agree with him, but I'm also pretty sure he was not molested when he was playing football at Penn State.

I do think it's got to be tough to revere a man for most of your adult life to then have him ripped apart in front of your eyes.

I hereby renounce and retract any and all statements in defense of Joe Paterno and Penn State.........I am now convinced that We Are Penn State should be changed to We Are The Problem.....and everyone from up from Sandusky should also do time....
Where the hell am I going? And what the hell am I doing in this handbasket?

That's some heavy shit.

How they can be allowed to have a football program (or anything sports related) after this is beyond me.

"We appreciate the effort that was put into this investigation," the family said in a statement. "The issue we have with some of the conclusions is that they represent a judgment on motives and intentions and we think this is impossible. We have said from the beginning that Joe Paterno did not know Jerry Sandusky was a child predator. Moreover, Joe Paterno never interfered with any investigation. He immediately and accurately reported the incident he was told about in 2001.

"It can be argued that Joe Paterno should have gone further. He should have pushed his superiors to see that they were doing their jobs. We accept this criticism. At the same time, Joe Paterno and everyone else knew that Sandusky had been repeatedly investigated by authorities who approved his multiple adoptions and foster children. Joe Paterno mistakenly believed that investigators, law enforcement officials, University leaders and others would properly and fully investigate any issue and proceed as the facts dictated. "This didn't happen and everyone shares the responsibility."

Can someone pour gasoline on the Paterno family and throw a lit match their way? Please?

Because it makes money. Lots and lots and lots of money.

I'm willing to believe Paterno balked at reporting Sandusky to the police because it would destroy a reputation and good name he spent 50 years building. Selfish? Absolutely, but not evil. Humans are, after all, naturally selfish creatures.

The AD and president were protecting a brand, one that made the university (and themselves) wealthy. It makes them no different than any other asshole who lies or looks the other way to cover his own ass or, worse, protect his employer or job.

Here's what will happen next:
The first scent of a winning season at Penn State will draw scads of "healing" stories and the Penn State "family" will drone on and on about how football is helping them put this ugliness behind them, like the good little corn-fed clueless midwesterners they are.

If all this happened at Tulsa or Southern Mississippi, the homecoming game would feature soccer players this fall.
My hand to God, she's gonna be at Carnegie Hall. But you - I'll let you have her now at the old price, OK? Which is, which is anything you wanna give me. Anything at all.

At least the football money will probably go to pay off the lawsuits. I think it's reasonable to suggest all the eventual judgments could bankrupt the school.

Not sure it will break the school financially, but safe to say those suits will keep "child rape" super-glued to Penn State for quite a while.

The thing that perplexed me the most going through what's been released from the Freeh report is how on earth could the university allow a football coach ... a freaking football coach ... to become so powerful.

The custodians who saw Sandusky abusing a boy didn't report what they saw because they were convinced Paterno would have them canned. Who gives a guy who basically shepherds around a bunch of dumb athletes that kind of power?

On the positive side, I don't think we'll ever see this kind of thing again, anywhere. Coaches may become emblematic of their schools (Krzyzewski at Duke, for example) but I can never see them getting the kind of sway a Paterno or Bear Bryant once had at their respective universities.

You're from SEC country and you really believe that?
I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now, what I'm with isn't 'it,' and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.

Yeah well maybe so, but if'n he was that close to God, the Impenetrable He would have reached over and smote the fuckin' shit outta him, for firing Ernie, and immediately sent him on a luge-ride straight to Hell, goddamit, that fat, self-absorbed blowhard motherfucker.

Yeah, I'm still pissed...

On the civil side, Paterno's role in the scandal could expose his estate to liability, said Altoona lawyer Richard Serbin, who has pursued lawsuits against the Roman Catholic Church and other institutions in Pennsylvania for the past 25 years. Paterno was considerably wealthy; he and his wife donated millions to the university, and in April the school paid millions in retirement benefits to his family and estate.

"When a responsible party passes away, that does not mean to say their wrongful conduct is excused by death," said Serbin, who does not represent any of Sandusky's victims. "Their estate becomes the representative of that person, and assets of their estate ... remain exposed to any verdict or judgment."

Maybe that explains the attitude of the Paterno family.

blah blah George Perles made AD blah blah John DiBiaggio goes to Tufts....

The fact that something like this happened should not surprise anyone and no, it is not going to fundamentally change anything about big time programs.

UM boosters will still be smug that THEIR school would never do anything so vile, that it has never even given cotton candy to a recruit outside of strictly adhered to principles.

You can insert Notre Dame, Alabama, Navy, any damn program. Each and everyone has an alumni base that thinks the rest are dirty and their precious programs are the exception and remain virginal & pure.

Kind of how you always thought of George Jackson's program...

Penn State students have pitched tents outside Beaver Stadium in order to score the best seats for that week's football game for nearly 20 years. Starting with the 2005 home game against Ohio State, the name of that tent city became known as Paternoville, and it was eventually recognized by the university as an official campus organization. But in what Ben Jones of StateCollege.com is calling "the first significant step in sanitizing Joe Paterno from university imagery," the group has decided to change its name to Nittanyville.

And, yes, the damaging revelations in last week's Freeh Report triggered renewed discussions that led to the change. Here's what Jeff Lowe, the group's vice president, told Ben Jones:

"The idea of being in the middle of a political war over the name, due to our association with Joe Paterno, has to lead to threats, hate mail and efforts from people outside of Penn State to try and ruin our ability to run an effective organization," Lowe said.

The Nittanyville group is also planning to donate some of its fundraising to a newly established children's protection center. But to judge by the comments on the group's Facebook page, the name change is not going over well among some Penn State students.

Check out the comments on the Facebook thread. Wow.
