None of us could have said it better. Little boys.

CHICAGO BEARS (5-3)

Sked: DET, BALT, @STL, @Min, DALL, @Cle, @Phi, GB
Odds: 2-to-1

DETROIT LIONS (5-3)

Sked: @Chi, @Pitt, TB, GB, @Phi, BALT, NYG, @Minn
Odds: Even

How It Could Happen: If the Lions win in Chicago this weekend, they'll sweep the season series, hop into the NFC North driver's seat and maybe even have a chance at a 2-seed. Vegas made the game a pick'em, which means they'd favor Detroit by three on a neutral field. Even Chicago fans don't think this Bears team is good. Then again, couldn't you see them winning one of those super Bearsy home games on Sunday — a kick-return TD, tons of momentum, then a Cutler pick-six, then Forte ripping off a 60-yard TD, then Megatron catching a pseudo–Hail Mary in triple coverage, then the Bears somehow pulling it out in the last three minutes because of a dumb penalty or something — and just kind of hanging around? I'm prepared for anything.

Why It Won't Happen: Because Bears fans are asking each other, "How the hell are we 5-3?" And because Lions fans are asking each other, "Seriously, how the hell are we gonna screw this up?"

The Verdict: I don't believe in the Bears. You know who I believe in? The Lions of Detroit. I believe that their comeback victory against Dallas was the most important thing that's ever happened to Matt Stafford. I believe Calvin Johnson is the biggest non-QB game-changer in football. I believe we're headed for a December of "Ndamukong Suh is a DOMINANT defensive player" stories. I believe in any schedule that — if they get by the Bears — yields seven non-playoff teams. Most of all, I believe in omens … and if you don't think Megatron Nowitzki winning the 2013 World Series of Poker 24 hours after Aaron Rodgers went down wasn't a good omen for the 2013 Detroit Lions, you're kidding yourself. I say no for the Bears and yes for the Lions.

LONG LIVE MEGATRON NOWITZKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One way or another, Alan Layne will find himself in front of a TV today rooting for Matthew Stafford to do what has become his custom, have another big game throwing the football.

Layne lives in Oklahoma City, so he doesn’t see much of the Lions these days. But if today’s NFC North showdown with the Chicago Bears isn’t on locally, he plans to find a table at a bar somewhere and watch the quarterback he has followed from afar break one of his father’s last remaining records.

Bobby Layne helped the Lions win three NFL championships in the 1950s and hasn’t thrown a pass for the team in 55 years.

But almost 27 years after his death — in what’s a tribute to his greatness as a quarterback and an indictment of how bad his successors have been —Layne’s 15,710 passing yards remain the most in Lions history.

Stafford, who attended the same high school as Layne, Highland Park High in Dallas, is 287 yards from surpassing that mark and adding to his growing legacy with the Lions.

Reached by phone this week, Alan Layne, 60, marveled that his father’s record was still standing.

“That’s amazing that it’s lasted this long,” he said.

As for watching Stafford break it, Layne said he’ll probably get a little nostalgic when the time comes.

“It’ll just maybe warm my heart a little bit just by mentioning my dad,” Layne said. “When I hear about records that are broken, it makes me proud, but just normal emotions. Nothing real big. But I’m all for Stafford breaking it and going on hopefully and getting them a championship before too long. You know there was a curse there, and I think my dad was responsible for it.”

Burleson dropped one fumble that rolled out of bounds, but he said that had nothing to do with his injury.

“I just didn’t tuck it away,” said Burleson, who spent the rest of the game pacing the sideline with a ball under his arm. “It was bad ball control. Instead of tucking it away, I was carrying it, being too fancy, hot-dogging a little bit.”

Something you continue to do even though you've fumbled doing the same thing in the past.

Dumbass.

They really need to win this week (not that they're not focusing on winning every week). The Baltimore game does not look like the gimme it once did and winning at Minnesota is no guarantee.

In a related note, the secondary did not look good at all last weekend.

Jim Schwartz gave embattled kicker David Akers a public vote of confidence after he missed his fifth kick of the season in Thursday’s 40-10 win over the Green Bay Packers, but the Detroit Lions are planning to work out kickers next week as they weigh their options at the position.

Akers, who signed a one-year deal to replace long-time kicker Jason Hanson in April, has made just 15 of 20 field-goal attempts this year and the Lions rank 29th in the league in field-goal percentage.

Let's see what's out there. I don't trust Akers at all.

Detroit Lions work out kickers, including Havard 'Kickalicious' Rugland

So, who's going to be the head coach when OTAs start next year?

That was one helluva a Lions-y loss.

When they were 6-3, the radio windbags were predicting this team will go 11-5, first playoff win in twenty years, yada yada yada. As much as I tried, I couldn't believe the hype.

This season reminded me of a hottie I dug back in college who would play fun when she wanted attention, but mostly just wanted to play me the fool. This went on for way too long before I woke up and realized I was getting duped. After I found some self-respect and quit being the sucker, there was nothing I wanted to do with her. I offer that experience as a parallel experience to being a Detroit Lions fan.
