betterhalf and I were just talking about that. We're not sure who that character is, but he's not funny.
Not. One. Bit.

4.0 and I took her folks to Two James around 9 p.m. Saturday night. Bar was full but the place hardly was hopping. A kid and two young women were behind the bar.
The bearded gnome comes over to us and informs it will be at least 20 minutes before we could get a drink because of the special care that goes into making them. 4.0's dad, who still seems fond of raising hell at 62, asks if he's going to freeze the ice cubes to make him a bourbon on the rocks. I had an old fashioned and the girls split a Moscow mule. The drinks were in front of us in less than five minutes.
I've heard similar stories from people who've walked into a relatively empty Sugar House. You'd think they're distilling the gin up their arrogant assholes.
I hate bartenders who think they're something more than the drummers of the service industry: They think they're one of a kind when there's a thousand more that can do the same job without the pretentiousness. Fuck 'em.

Played out: Detroit as a marketing gimmick. This BBC article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25509923 , courtesy of the adult art project, is heavy on the Shinola watch company. I did some reading up on that one day and now I'm inundated with their targeted ads. The watches, of course, are made here in the Argonaut Building. My take is that the concept and design are not honest, by which I mean they made up a phony history and a faux-retro look (see PT Cruiser, brought to us by Chrysler who coincidentally pioneered the made in Detroit gimmick) and, seriously, if you're stuffing quartz movements into Chinese cases you're not a skilled watchmaker, you're an assembler, and a white lab coat doesn't elevate you to something else. A watch worth spending more than $50 on will have a mechanical movement of gears and springs and will tick. I wish them all the success, but Shinola is just dressing. I'll reserve comment on their bicycles and leather goods.
