This situation brings to mind the case of domestic content laws in foreign countries and how they were addressed by the Big Three. This is going back to the mid-90s, but I understood that Venezuela had a law to this effect, and Chrysler's work-around was to ship crates filled with kit cars for assembly by the locals. In other words there was really nothing manufactured in Venezuela that was needed or appropriate, so they'd let the natives perform the final steps of assembly. A few turns of the wrench by Jose and ta-da: a Venezuelan "made" Neon.

Kind of dispiriting to read that the watches are, to my eyes, only American in terms of the leatherwork. Like, who gives a shit about the leather? The precision work re: design, engineering, and manufacturing is where I'd expect the real value to be added. Welcome to New Venezuela, boys...

They still do this. additionally there are plans to d othis in new markets as well.

They bring in Transit Connects from Turkey with rear seats and windows, they can the seats and install rear blanking panels in port. This is to get around a commercial vehicle tarrif, till you get called on it.

Hand wringing over everything that comes out of Brooks Patterson's mouth. Please.

I came across a "bootleg" PDF of the New Yorker article in question. Can't really say I disagree with much that he's alleged to have said. Yeah, the Indian reservation thing was pretty impolitic but I get the impression that was said many years ago.

What does chafe is the gratuitous Detroit bashing that journalsists seem obligated to throw in. Driving around in Patterson's chauffered van, they "passed the city waterworks, a beautiful but decayed building on the Detroit River". No, it's not decayed. The roof is in good shape, it's clean and dry, and free of graffiti. If anything, it's a showpiece of classic architecture. This is just a cheap shot. There's plenty decay to see, but this isn't it. Similarly, I was reading something about P.J. O'Rourke, a writer who I usually enjoy, and what he wrote about the city. I forget the exact word, it may have been 'decrepit', used to describe Belle Isle. Belle Isle is far from decrepit. True, the restrooms have been closed for as long as I remember, and the zoo is shuttered, but the grass is cut, the roads are in good condition and the garbage is picked up. How is this decrepit? It's a fucking park. Mowed fields, navigable roads and trash pick-up are all that's necessary. Cross to Oh Fuck You.

O'Rourke may be one of those writers whose style is well-suited for certain topics and ill-suited for others.
That's the piece wherein he made a reference to a "joke" which, by his account, is a big favorite around here.
A) I've never heard anyone use the "joke"
B) It was inapplicable; the damned thing just didn't work
C) It wasn't funny

I haven't read the article yet, but the stuff I've heard on the news about crime has been spot-on. Don't stop for gas in the city? Um, yeah. Some places are only dangerous after dark, but others are no-go even at noon.

From what I gather about his reservation comment is that he brought it up with the reporter during their tour. I saw an interview with him where he said he told her a story about his prediction years ago that has come true.

That's for goddam sure.

I see that some folks felt her performance to be, well, revolutionarily sexy, which would be short for "I've never been to a strip joint."
We'll see-- and I do mean that we will see-- how those already ham-hockified thighs are looking when that flavorless tart is 40, hhmm?

Personally, if some guys (and a few dames, not to casually disregard the LGBTFYIBTWPDQASAP contingent) are envious of Jay-Z, that's no skin off of my hawk-like, predatory beak, but having my woman do a pap-smear spread, for an audience of millions, does not have any erotic appeal for me.

Of course, what that really means-- in au courant parlance-- is that I'm a "hater."
Which, I suppose, I am, but that's not germane to this monologue re: my preferences, goddammit.

Speaking of played out, did anyone listen to Ozzy speak last night at the Grammys? Even his band members couldn't help but laugh.

Not to mention the presenter that was up there with Yoko Ono. When that presenter misspoke and called John Lennon John Legend, after she finished talking about the Double Fantasy album, Ono said, dripping with sarcasm, "that's so nice of you to remember that". She's played out, as well as that unknown presenter with her.

Hell no I didn't hear Ozzy, because I sure as hell didn't watch that damned thing, but I wish that one of the network TV news shows that are dwelling on it, or one of the numerous sources that are tweeting out links to all kinds of Grammy Moments, would provide a clip of that.

I think the one responsible for the Lennon/Legend goof was Alicia Keys, but I am not a reliable source.

That "unknown presenter" with Yoko and Alicia Keys was Olivia Harrison, widow to some guy. I think they said his name was "George"?

Clarifying, though, the one who committed the gaffe was Keys.

The Grammys in general just need to die, much like the Rock & Roll Hall of Lame.

And outdoor hockey games. Once a year is enough, Gary.

As a lifelong Detroiter who has been living downtown for 11 years, I’ve found it amazing what you discover when you walk everywhere and get out of your routine, especially when it comes to places to eat and drink. There are new businesses that have just opened and older joints that have been around for decades. These are the great spots that might not have the biggest marketing budgets but when you find them, you fall in love with the place…and the people who run it.

We’re all creatures of habit, so it’s easy to go to the few places you love over and over again, but this summer we’re challenging folks to try new places around downtown. For those that say, “I’ve been everywhere,” or “There’s nothing to do downtown,” the #DXFchallenge is for you!

For years, my organization has been creating a checklist of downtown bars & restaurants that we give out at the D:hive Welcome Center and on all of our tours (now under our new brand the Detroit Experience Factory).

The total number of bars & restaurants in greater downtown (Downtown, Midtown, New Center, Corktown, Eastern Market, East Riverfront) is now at 275!

So this summer we decided to do a more interactive version of the checklist to encourage people to get out and visit as many of the 275 places as they could and then share their experiences via Instagram. On June 1st we launched the #DXFchallenge and we’ve had over 200 entries in just a couple of weeks. Everyone who posts even one photo with the hashtag #DXFchallenge will be entered to win cool prizes, but there will also be a monthly winner and a grand prize winner at the end of the summer as well. Head to http://www.weknowdetroit.com/challenge to find out more and we’ll see you downtown this summer!

Something tells me the "cool prizes" are free tours of downtown.
That said, anyone with an Instagram account can have some fun with this.
My hand to God, she's gonna be at Carnegie Hall. But you - I'll let you have her now at the old price, OK? Which is, which is anything you wanna give me. Anything at all.
