What park was that? I don't remember one up there, but that doesn't mean anything given the 30 odd years of drinking.

I used to take my nephew to play at Joann park. He was 2 and I was 6. It was about a block from my sister's house and she would cross us at the corner and I'd take him to swing and play in the sand. Those were the days.

Yes, they were. In winter, the Parks and Rec Department would flood the park. I used to skate there for hours. I was a Peggy Fleming wanna-be.

Not too far from the Catholic store. That park had the best playground equipment (with exception of the monkey bars). It even had one of those cool covered slides. There was a mural on the side of the building adjoining the lot. Funny, I can't remember the name.

Wasn't the Catholic store McCauley's or something. I remember going there for a 1st Communion rosary and a Confirmation Missal covered in pure white vinyl. So saintly.
But I don't remember a park. We hung mostly at Heilmann or St. Jude playfield.

Bought my stuff there, too. My brother hung out at Heilmann. My fave was the park on Seven Mile. There was another park East of Gratiot but North of McNichols (I think) that was also pretty good.

Joann (actually Calimera) Park is right here......I used to play and ice skate there, too. It's between Lappin and Pinewood

My sister's house was on the NE corner of Manning and Joann. It's still standing.

How do you get Google Maps to serve up the url as was done above? I linked to GM via the url above, keyed in an address of interest to me, and got MAF's url.
Soon I discovered that this rock-thing was true...

Up in the right hand corner of the google maps page is a button that says 'Link'. Click that.

Dear D-Day,

My business is killing, and business is good. Especially since the slackers have been moved to the side.

BTW - that lawsuit thing? Has not even slowed us down.

Sincerly,

Ken/Craig

P.S. Thanks, MAF

The 7 Mile/Gratiot area is in the news. (Hate to buzzkill the nostalgia.)

I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now, what I'm with isn't 'it,' and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.

Saw that yesterday. I was just hoping it wasn't my old house. Turns out it was up the street a few blocks, but still..

Yes, depressing. When I saw that picture, my first (unbidden) thought was to think, "FUCK! Wasn't anything taken care of in this city?!?" I'm so tired of seeing once-loved houses just used up and left to rot.

That area has experienced some nasty crime of late. Is this due to other areas of Detroit being picked clean and this is the last area to be destroyed?
