Hot Fudge Car Talk

Looks like this thread got lost in the not so seamless migration....

Drove my truck for the first time in weeks (wifes been drving it) and of course it has some approaching failure. Heard a little hum from the PS pump as I was backing into the parking spot. I pop the hood and sure enough either the pump or high side hose is bleeding. The pump reservoir is pretty much a ball of rust but I think the actual leak is the hose. I won't gamble and just replace both. Pump is $60 and the hose is $30 at Murrays.

Looks to be an easy job.....

159K and still going. It's in money pit status now with new tires last month and exhaust coming.

Good call reconstituting the thread.

Since we lost the original thread I replaced the wife's Taurus wagon with another. I won't miss that car. Never forget the time we crossed wires on the starter and all but set the engine on fire. Lotta juice in those batteries.

In a former career part of our test plan was the "Reverse Battery Test".

Glad to see this thread again.

Did David Hall ever buy that Datsun?

Not this one in particular, although it is cool.

Teeny bit hung-over this morning, so wasn't real confident in my spelling of "resurrect.".

I didn't get the Datsun.... put it in Hot Fudge Long Term Plans.

But I am fortunate enough to drive a different kind of sports car.

Just brought her out on the Belle Isle race track. Glad I didn't get arrested.

Dodge?

I had to replace a power steering hose on my Dodge a couple of months ago. One of them rotted out at the steering box and was dripping horribly.
I replaced both of the hoses while I was at it.
Cost? Can't remember, but no more than 50 bucks for the hoses
Time? About an hour to do the job, and about 2 hours to clean up my garage floor after all the fluid ran all over it.

Big truck or little truck?

Same location for me. Leaking where the ferrule is crimped on it looks like. I was just going to do the hose but looking at the corrosion on the reservoir it isn't far behind.

Murrays near the suburban workplace didn't have the parts in stock. West Vernor does.

Yeah it's messy already. I'll do the job in front of the neighbors house.....

Brings to mind something that's been a problem for me: who has the parts that you need. Back in the day everyone had what you needed, but now it's often a crap shoot. I'm blaming the fragmented market - at work we've counted almost 300 active namepalates on the US market today. Plenty of re-badging, too, but still too much for any store carry everything.

Recall the day when buying a new (or "new" used) also meant picking up a new Haynes or Chiltons? I had to wait three years before books for the Saturn Ion were available. Five years for the van, and nothing yet available for the new Taurus. Hate flying blind, man.

Big....Ram 2500.
My "ferrule" actually was rotted with a hole in it. It had a 90° piece coming out of the box, then to rubber.
I didn't even mess with Murrays or Auto Zone, etc. I went right to the dealership. They had 'em in stock, so that tells me it's one of those "characteristic" things.

Just get the factory manual. I used to work at a place that had a corporate library with every factory repair manual you could imagine. That was nice. You could use the internet. There is always someone out there who has done the job you need to do often with personal pictures or a scan of the manual.

Excitable. Mine is the Dakota. How's the electrical system been on that 2500?
