This is like Hot Fudge Overheard but for things we experience with our our other senses.
A little background on what I have witnessed over the past five months in my new building.
My next-door neighbor is a fifty to sixty year-old man. He lives alone, save for a couple of times a week when he has some friends over, sometimes an occasional lady. I know all of this because the walls in this building are paper thin.
He does not work, and the TV is constantly on.
I've gotten the sense that he is hiding out from somebody. On the rare occasions when he leaves his apartment, he cracks the door open slightly, peeks out and then leaves. A couple of times, I knocked on his door; once to let him know that I'd be having a party, and another time to borrow some sugar or something. Both times he was inside, but he never opened the door. His peep-hole is drilled out.. making a dime-sized hole in the door.
Recently, I've seen gang-squad type police officers rolling through our parking lot and checking license plates. I figured they were trying to serve a warrant or something. I considered my neighbor to be their likely mark, thereby explaining his reluctance to socialize.
Today, I came home to find something interesting on his doorstep. A dead blackbird with its head cut off. The bird was placed directly in the middle of his doormat.
I wonder if this dead blackbird is a message akin to the horse's head in the bed. If it is, its probably from charachters other than the Detroit Police.
My bed shares a common wall with his apartment, so I really hope that I don't witness some sort of terrible gunfight. Do you think I'm overreacting to the situation?
