We give him pennies, nickels and dimes and he'd swallow them, one after another like jujubees. Pencils were like licorice sticks. He'd eat twigs, grass, and leaves like a cervid. He didn't have a lot going on upstairs but he wasn't a retard either- more like he craved attention and gobbling down marbles was his way of gaining an quick audience.

He moved away after 8th grade and I haven't thought about him for decades, until this morning. Curious if he ever made it to adulthood, I queried Facebook and there he was, not only still alive but looking healthy. Amazing what the human body can endure.

During the middle school years I went to school with a kid who proved to be wild. He was the kid who always had something to say and was always up to some kind of shit that would get him busted into detention, writing sentences, etc., things like throwing the playground balls onto the roof of the school, tossing snowballs at cars as they drove by the playground on Grand River, kicking over trash cans... Every boy at that age does crazy and stupid things, but I could see that this kid didn't know when to quit and so he was forever under punishment or waiting in the school office for his father (DPD) to collect him and presumably beat his ass anew. I was like, dude, why don't you just knock this off, but of course he never did.

They held him back for a year -presumably to allow him to cool his jets- and so he started high school behind us. He lasted only through the first semester before his disruptive ways got him bounced and off to the public school he went and thus left our radar.

Today, wise with age, I'd wonder if the kid had ADD and then look into an appropriate dose in order to allow him to function.

Group of Michigan superheroes fractured by crime-fighting feud

East Jordan— Petoskey Batman and Bee Sting were as thick as thieves, getting baptized together in the Jordan River — in northern Michigan.

Now they’re archenemies.

The two men, part of a Michigan group that fights crime while dressed as superheroes, accuse each other of all manner of villainy.

It includes purported death threats and allegations of welfare fraud, probation violations and misuse of money from a fundraiser for the homeless.

Holy dirty laundry, Batman!

Their spat over leadership of the Michigan Protectors has split the dozen-member group into two parts.

“He is an abusive, neglectful, thieving, boastful, cowardly crook,” said Mark Williams, alias Petoskey Batman. “He belongs in jail and I will see him there.”

Adam Besso, aka Bee Sting, said Williams is obsessed.

“He has to tear others down to feel better about himself,” Besso said. “He’s like Lord of the Flies with a slightly better version of dirt bags.”

After the leadership argument, things escalated when Besso criticized Williams for having two girlfriends. Williams told Besso’s pregnant fiancée and mother of his two children Besso had cheated on her.

Fiancee Mandy Wilson was so angry she began spilling her own secrets about Besso. “He’s a pig,” she said about Besso.

Others say the dysfunctional duo need a time-out.

“This all baffles me,” said Matt Gannaway of Shelby Township, an acquaintance of Besso.

“I can look at any junior high- or high school-aged kid’s Facebook profile and read the same conversation.”

Williams and Besso became friends after Williams got into trouble with the law in 2011.

Williams, 34, a part-time landscaper from Harbor Springs, was patrolling downtown Petoskey as Batman when a bunch of drunks chased him to the roof of a hardware store.

Police discovered him hanging from the ledge of the building and charged him with disturbing the peace.

The arrest made headlines around the state and Besso, 37, a factory inspector, invited Williams to a superhero patrol in Flint.

A year later Besso had his own legal troubles.

Armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, he was patrolling a Burton trailer park when he got into an argument with a resident revving his motorcycle after midnight. The two wrestled for control of the weapon, which discharged as they fell to the ground.

No one was injured.

Besso, who said he is a twice-divorced Iraq war veteran who receives counseling for anger issues, served 102 days in jail for attempted assault, according to court records.

He was criticized by other costumed crime fighters in Michigan and the rest of the country for bringing a gun on patrol.

One of the only people who defended him was Williams.

“We were brothers,” Williams said. “I loved him as much as I love my own blood family.”

When Besso got out of jail in 2012, he rejuvenated the dormant Michigan Protectors and became the de facto leader. But members of the team chafed under his guidance, saying Besso rarely consulted them and didn’t like being second-guessed.

Several members wanted the more easygoing Williams to be co-leader but, when he approached Besso with the idea in October, Besso blew up.

Several weeks later, Williams announced to the group he had two girlfriends and hoped to bring them to a group dinner on Thanksgiving.

When Besso criticized Williams for having two girlfriends, Williams said Besso was a hypocrite because he had cheated on his fiancee.

Williams once meekly followed Besso. Now he says he wants to destroy him.

“It drives me insane,” Williams said. “I will scream from the rooftops until Bee Sting is shown for what he truly is.”

Wilson, Besso’s fiancée, told Williams Besso is driving with a suspended license.

Besso confirmed his license has been suspended since his arrest in 2012. He said he can’t afford the $850 cost of reinstatement and other fees, but needs to drive to keep his job.

He said his probation officer was aware of his driving, but a Department of Corrections official said it’s a violation of his probation for the 2012 assault.

Wilson also told Williams that Besso used Wilson’s social benefits card to buy food for the homeless. Besso confirmed he used the card for the homeless three or four times, spending $30 to $40 each time, along with $65 for the Detroit barbecue.

But a Department of Human Services official said only the cardholder is allowed to use the card and the food can’t go to a third party.

Wilson said she wishes her fiancé would give up his superhero work.

“The whole superhero fascination has always eluded me,” she said. “I think it’s a whole mentality where he wants to be involved with something bigger than himself.”

In October, Besso raised $671 in an online fundraiser for a Michigan Protectors’ trip to Columbia, S.C., to protest the city’s decision to outlaw homelessness.

Failing to get financing for a vehicle to transport the group, he postponed the trip and used $115 of the money for a trip to help the homeless in western Michigan in December.

He said group members and donors supported it, but several said they were never consulted.

“Adam is out of control,” said Ellen Eberhardt, a donor and former group member from Flint.

In December Williams wrote on Facebook Besso didn’t buy his children anything for Christmas but had bought presents for another woman’s kids.

One of Williams’ friends asked for Besso’s address, saying she had friends who lived in his town.

“take him out back and shoot him,” wrote Chandra Miller of Fort Myers, Fla.

Miller, contacted by a reporter, said she was serious about the threat but later changed her mind after talking with Besso.

Our costumed crime fighters including Bee Sting are back in the news. Once again, the press is less than favorable.

These types (by that I mean people who don Halloween costumes everyday instead of toiling at real jobs and galavant about like Don Quixote on self-appointed missions to save the world) usually have big-time issues. That they don't get along is no surprise and hardly newsworthy.

Bee Sting. Flippin' Bee Sting.

The costume bit reminds me of something and I apologize if I've already shared this. I didn't know the guy but I was acquainted with the family. Before he was Bee he was USAF and was deployed to Iraq. A pic of the newly deployed youngster was passed around and it featured a guy done up like Robocop, complete with visor. Air Force you know, and here's a guy in helmet and flak vest and knee pads and everything like he's Army and going out for some blitzkrieg. It looked a little funny at the time but I didn't say so. In retrospect the cos-play started long ago.

Oh, the coda: deployment didn't last long. I've forgotten how long but maybe a month before he stumbled, injured a knee, and then came home for good.

One other thought: the militancy on behalf of poor and homeless brings to mind BAMN.

Traverse City man with diaper fetish sentenced to 30 years in prison

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A Traverse City man with a diaper fetish was sentenced Tuesday, July 15, to 30 years in federal prison for sexually assaulting two girls.

Scott Allen Mallwitz was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Robert Holmes Bell.

Federal prosecutors said Mallwitz “engaged in a pattern (of) deviant behavior.”

Mallwitz, 48, had his first encounter with police when undercover officers in Texas contacted him while he posed as a female teen. He allegedly talked about having sex with a daughter and sent a video of himself masturbating into a diaper.

Mallwitz allegedly admitted to downloading child pornography from the Internet, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff Davis wrote in court documents.

He also told investigators that he used chat rooms and a web camera to talk with children as young as 12 in a sexual manner.

During the search, police found a “large number of diapers,” Davis wrote.

Mallwitz was arrested and pleaded guilty to state charges for possessing child pornography. He was sentenced to probation, which required him to complete sex-offender counseling.

In January 2010, he violated probation after a parent reported that Mallwitz had been following her daughter in a van while she walked home from school. When police found Mallwitz, he had infant diapers and a photo of the girl he was following on his cell phone, the prosecution said.

Mallwitz’s probation was revoked, and he was sent to prison until released on Feb. 11, 2013.

Soon, the FBI began investigating a report that Mallwitz had sexually assaulted two girls under the age of 12 - in 2001 and 2002 in Leelanau County. One of the girls revealed the abuse while talking to a counselor.

The FBI investigated because the alleged crime occurred on land held in trust by the U.S. for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

Defense attorney David Kaczor said his client has had a troubled life. He was teased as a child and had severe acne and boils on his face that required surgery.

He had very low self esteem and a history of seizures. He did not marry or have children, and was living with his parents.

“Mr. Mallwitz is open to receiving any and all treatment that will be available to him in Bureau of Prisons custody,” his attorney wrote. “He wishes he could go back and change what he did some 13 or 14 years ago and he is ready and willing to get help to overcome the roots of this offense.”

Reading this story and noting the highlighted portion caused me to wonder anew about the present state of schoolmates and neighborhood kids who were odd ducks. What a life, you know, to be the weird kid and if not hated then at least widely regarded as being the perennial butt of all jokes and social suicide for anyone who might otherwise show them kindness. We had our share of these, and while I don’t feel that I was ever the serial tormentor I will still kick myself today, decades after the fact, for not doing more to be a friend or a protector to these children. Being teased and having kick-me signs taped to one’s back doesn’t begin to excuse subsequent sexual abuse, but I like to fantasize that if life had a magical reset button then the shithead in this story might have had a friend, gotten a job, had a life, and then managed his tastes in a way that wouldn’t have resulted in damaged lives for the young girls.

It probably would have done the guy a ton of good to have someone to just talk to. You know, a friend that he could confide in, jack off into diapers with, or help him hold his rape victims down.
By using the El Dorado Atmospheric and Oceanic temperatures thermal map. I caculated the contrary direction where the polar jet stream is going and it didn't look pretty.

Looks like Sean is still in Saginaw. Still one kid (who's now 5. where does the time go!), still with Kally. At some point they got married, even, although they are still living with her mom, drawing food stamps and Medicaid.

Anyone remember Jay Thunderbolt, first introduced on the old DetroitBlog? The story was about a Detroit entrepreneur who runs a B.Y.O.B. strip club (aka Club Thunderbolt) in the eastside house he inherited from his parents. Or you can call and he'll bring girls over, 24/7. I can only guess the grade of stripper talent we're talking about, but that's neither here nor there.

http://www.metrotimes.com/detroit/nothi ... id=2197129

I've never patronized Club Thunderbolt for several reasons, mainly his east Seven Mile neighborhood scares me shitless, and I can only imagine the depravity of getting lap dances from Detroit strippers in a musty house while the weird owner sits there watching. But I did find the business model interesting and wondered:

A) if it was marginally profitable.
B) if having strangers in your house at all hours for couch dances brought a unique set of customer service issues.
C) if personnel management was a perpetual challenge, i.e.- turnover rate, absenteeism, etc., seeing how human resources were on-call talent with limited formal workplace experience.

Anyways, I haven't heard anything about Club Thunderbolt in awhile. Anyone know if it still exists?

I did some searching and found a couple of dated features, like a podcast and a segment on the MTV show "Vice" (now on HBO). Evidently he made quite an impression with those guys.

http://www.mtv.com/videos/news/603871/t ... bolt.jhtml

Then I stumbled onto this story and found that Jay Thunderbolt (aka Joel Suminski) had gotten into some hot water a couple of years ago for playing with pipe bombs, so maybe that's why he's laying low these days.

With Jay out of commission for awhile, is there a vacuum waiting to be filled by a savvy competitor? Is there a hungry customer base that this business model is suited for, but no current service provider?
