Opening and Closing

Open: Twingo's

Closed: Twingo's Euro Cafe

DETROIT -- Twingo's Euro Cafe, a popular midtown restaurant that reopened last year to rave reviews, was shuttered this week by Michigan treasury agents over non-payment of taxes, according to a legal notice posted on the building.

Calls to the restaurant were not answered today, and yellow police tape was wrapped around the building. Diners were eating at the restaurant's sidewalk tables as recently as Saturday night.

The notice said the inventory was being seized due to unpaid taxes.

Calls to a Michigan Department of Treasury spokesman were not immediately returned.

Fans of the eatery, which is on Cass and located near Wayne State University, were shocked at the closure.

"That was one of our favorite places, and we were excited to eat there now that the weather was getting warm," said Sheila Rice, a Wayne State University graduate student. "Business seemed like it was doing well."

The restaurant has been plagued by problems. The original Twingo's had been at that location for about 10 years until closing in 2004.

It remained empty until January 2006, when it was opened by John Lopez, who had worked at Atlas Global Bistro and Agave, also now-closed, and chef Shawn Mac who had worked at Boocoo in Royal Oak.

Like the owner(s) care. Have they opened the Mercury yet? Lopez has done this numerous times. I think we should start a thread dedicated how many businesses he's been associated with that have gone under, or kicked him out of the deal.

This is the man hassling them for daring to speak the truth on Sunday nights. Loose change man. It's all about the loose change.

Opening: Loft of Fashions in Capitol Park
Article from March 13: http://www.modeldmedia.com/developmentnews/loft85.aspx

Closing: Loft of Fashions in Capitol Park
This was a guess on my part based on all of the "Going out of Business Sale" and "Everything must go" signs in their windows. It looked like Nationwide Warehouse.

So, they made it what, six weeks? That Capitol Park sure is ripe for retail!
Clearly if I had the needs and funding I would surely invest here and become the change Detroit needs.

In all honestly, I gt the sense that that store was never really meant to last a long time. It looked like a closeout space from the beginning.

Methinks someone had a warehouse full of stuff somewhere and decided to get rid of it all in a space they'd get for cheap. That was some nasty shit in there.

A few years ago that place was pretty nice (as fast food joints go) but recently you could tell things were going downhill. Last time I went went they were out of black angus. That's like a McDonalds franchise running out of chicken mcnuggets.

Quizno's is in the Buhl. Never been in it, but the attorneys line up for them.

I think that the only damn thing to eat (south of a ten) post-five is coneys on Lafayette.

Wow. I never thought to head over there. I've been kind of adopted by the guys at Lafayette. Wish I'd have known about this before I started packing up my office.
