CaseyC's Cincy thread

Postby caseyc » Mon Mar 24, 2008 3:08 pm

With each passing day, month and year, my departure from detroit grows ever more distant and faded. While the wonders of this newfangled world wide web continue to keep me ensnared like a wayward stegosaurus in the Detroit tar pits, truth be told, we are now reaching the 5 year anniversary of my exodus, and it doesn't look like I'll be back any time soon.

As such, I will use this thread here to burble about my current digs, thereby sparing all from any such exposure in other threads. All mention on said subject shall thusly be confined here, regardless of any relevance to Detroit or Sports. This is as much an act of self-muzzling as anything else.

Nobody should be exposed to such chatter other than by their own volition....that said, I like to have an outlet....
---------------------------------------------------------------------
For starters, here is a great project going up adjacent to the CBD in Over the Rhine (OTR). OTR occupies a role similar to that of the lower cass corridor, in that it is full of social service agencies, and has long been regarded as an ash dump of human refuse and detritus for the region. Thriving open air drug trades can be found with relative ease. That said, the building density is much higher, and the architecture is amazing. There's also a lot more in the way of new business and investment, and the 3CDC (cincy equivalent to DEGC) has taken over a lot of the redevelopment, owning something in the nature of 300+ buildings. The ballet, symphony and opera also perform at Music Hall in OTR, many local theater groups operate in the area, and the Art Academy renovated a large warehouse in the heart of the neighborhood as part of their new campus. One of the prime new districts, the Q (featured in this spread) has unique new retail and a really outstanding new restaurant/wine bar, the Lavomatic Cafe. excellent stuff. the neighborhood is about a 10 minute walk from my downtown office, which is near the river. Here is a decent thread from urban ohio.com:

Clearly if I had the needs and funding I would surely invest here and become the change Detroit needs.

Wasn't Over-the-Rhine the neighborhood that was also the epicenter of the Cincinnati riots just a few (?) years ago?

"civil disturbance" yes...in '01.
I missed that.....at least the buildings are still standing.

about as relevant as the Mt. Pleasant/Adams Morgan/DC riots of '91......good times.

I was visiting DC then. Stayed in Georgetown and took the bus to the National Zoo. Ate at the Austin Grill. There really wasn't much going on during those riots. Adams morgan is one of the cooler neighborhoods now, too. Definitely good times.

Hey. Those riots were good fun for those in the middle. Non stop helicopters and spots buzzing the house...close up all the windows and get the cats inside to keep tear gas out. The first night, as the copters buzzed, I walked out my back door to the alley to see what was happening. an immediate spotlight hit me from a copter. I felt like I was on stage. I walked half a block to Columbia Road to see a cop, kneeling behind his open car door, gun out, dry cleaners on fire behind him, rocks being thrown his way, totally pinned down. I decided that was not the best way out to see what was going on. The dry cleaners, however, provided a great boon...after they cleared out the burned out store, the large vintage 1948 neon sign ("Vogue Cleaners") was thrown out back. It remains in my living room to this day.

Anywho, I hopped back home (sans spotlight) and grabbed my housemate's bike (no use risking mine). I rode over to 16th Street and Mt. Pleasant (block away), and rounded the corner to see multiple police cars burning (and some tipped over). Apparently, many of the hispanic rioters were reportedly well-versed in central american commando tactics, particularly with regard to the fastest way to burn a cop car trying to move through a crowd of people (unlocked gas cap).

Looking up Mt. Plasant, I could see a full riot battalion (shields, helmets, tear gas cannons etc.) with their back to me facing north. I, along with many iothers on foot, fled north in the parallel alley and ended up behind the rioter line. A barricade formed of burning garbage, mattresses etc....as rioters tossed rocks and a few were dragged down. At some point a wayward metrobus pulled up...essentially stuck. A bandito with his face shrouded in bandana immediately started hitting the bus, the object of his immense rage, with numchuks. Not making much headway, he and his compatriots turned the ire of their wrath on the Church's Fried Chicken neighboring the bus stop. Within seconds, the plate glass was shattered, and jubilant rebels ran out into the streets clutching 1/4 corn cobs, biscuits and armfuls of delicious fried chicken.

watching with some bemusement, I was startled from my chuckles by the shattering of two 7-11 windows immediately scross from my vantage point. Within seconds, the store was depleted by untold numbers of 2 liter soda products and chips. I headed home and battened it down.

Throughout the night, people ftrom all over DC made their way to join in (taking buses, riding their bikes etc.), and the looter mob made its way down Columbia Road to 18th street...hitting various other stores like Foot Locker, Popeye's (more chicken!), and a few others.

We remained under curfew another night with sporadic looting.

oh look, there's even a Wiki entry (but of course).

I suspect this is deficient.

a nearby observer of these riots coined the phrase that lead to the term "Riot Grrrl" and accompanying movement.

On an unrelated note...this forum is veeeeerrrrrrrrryyyyyyy slow to load today. for me at least.

This downtown area/OTR bar is very much a new fave of mine....and dates back to 1870's...it was closed for the past 15 years or so and recently reopened. It is a very cool space...and am glad to see this good news:

Grammer's - Lower prices.
We listen.

The prices are dropping on the pints of many regular beers - 16oz pints will start at $3.00

I am cutting the prices on all of our large glasses by quite a bit, for instance:
$6.00 24oz. pours of Moerlein's OTR and Barbarossa
$4.50 24oz. pours of Sam Adams
$5.00 24oz. pours of BarrelHouse's Dubeneck Lager
$5.00 24oz. pours of Paulaner Hefe-Weizen
$5.50 24oz. pours of Bells Two-Hearted

Lois and I are planning some happy hour specials (still working out details of those, but will run from 4:30 - 6:30 M-F and will include rotating beer and drink specials).

We rotate beers regularly on a couple of out taps, so always look for new ones. Our bottle selection changes frequently as well and will soon be increasing. Also, let us know if you want us to start stocking something that we currently do not.

We like input from our customers, and we always take care of our regulars (and sometimes go with them on outings...and to Ikea).

On other subjects, briefly and in no particular order:
- We are going to have live music very soon, and are now officially part of the falls annual Mid-Point music festival
- A website is being developed, and I hope it will be completed soon
- The kitchen is being worked on, so a little expansion to the menu is coming soon, although a full menu wont be for a while
- A beer garden is in the works, I'm really working to get that set up as soon as possible
- The new gate for our gated/secure parking lot is being installed
- The facade will be painted in nicer weather, as well as blacktopping the parking lot
- When customers are there, we are open until 2:30am, but if not we'll close earlier (cough cough, Monday nights).

Thanks so much to those of you that have supported us thus far, the overwhelming positive response has been great, and we can't wait for everyone else to come visit Grammer's.
.
It is just an amazing place.
There really isn't a better way to describe it...
...wait, yes there is - an amazing place, now with cheaper beer.

there are some cool photos of the inside of the bar at the very end of the thread here....although they don't show enough to do it justice...also a great old giant moose head in one of the rooms...

Nice little shindig they have going on at Fountain Square tonight for the Xavier - WVU game. Outdoor TVs and everything. Word from the radio was that there was quite a turnout. I would have liked to have gone but I had to work late and I'll be in early tomorrow morning......damn. Maybe Saturday if X survives (which I think they will)

were they selling beer? I like the fact that downtown's premier gathering space/park/square breaks out booze sales at the drop of a hat. I can't wait for the secretary's day beer tent.

I would consider saturday.....but conflicts.

Yeah.....that was the other thing that kept me away. The fact that they were selling beer. I'm on antibiotics prior to having my wisdom teeth out next week......temptation would have been to great.

So, no beer for D-Day until that's done.

Dammit.

The Opening day parade here is seemingly never-ending. I can see it go through downtown from my office window (on the 28th floor). It takes at least 2 hours for this thing to get completed, running from Findlay Market (cinci version of Eastern Market) http://www.findlaymarket.org/ through downtown and ending near the park.

not sure what the draw is....actual floats are few and far between. seems like a lot of advertising (oh look honey, here comes the roto rooter van!)....I do like the st. bernard dog parade(for schottzie) and the elephants wearing giant Reds caps and holding baseball bats in their trunks (mandated by Marge Schott in her bequest to the zoo elephant house).
