If only. Stalin, Pol Pot, and Mao killed many who would not embrace atheism.

Dawkins is one bright guy. Top-notch thinker. Enjoyed two of his books and many of his articles. But he's been behaving like an asshole in public for years. He should shut up and let the books do the talking, if that makes sense.

.

The main dogmatic teachings of communism, that we find were responsible for the atrocities committed under the various communist regimes, namely:-

* The idea that individual property ownership is inherently evil (i.e. the evil bourgeoisie)
* The belief that collectivization is the key to efficient production
* The complete hatred of people who were opposed to the ideas of communism

had nothing to do with, and were not in any way derived from, atheism.

Furthermore as the quotation from Marx above shows, atheism was considered ultimately irrelevant to the development of communism.

Given these facts, any critique of atheism that is based on atrocities commited by communist regimes can be summarily dismissed.

I used to think I was an agnostic but a fundie informed me there's no such thing: you either believe or you don't. I guess I don't then.

One time I was asked if I was an infidel. How do you answer that?

I think the word infidel just means unfaithful, as in infidelity, so I guess that answer would be yes.

Did you tell him to fuck off?
By using the El Dorado Atmospheric and Oceanic temperatures thermal map. I caculated the contrary direction where the polar jet stream is going and it didn't look pretty.

I think that would be Castro's boyfriend's nickname.

Try being an atheist in the Bible Belt. One of the main roads connecting the airport to the rest of the city is the Billy Graham Parkway. In a few short miles it takes you right past the Billy Graham Library and two mega churches with 3,000 + seats each.

I got one of those internet ordinations so I can officiate a wedding for some friends and casually mentioned it at work. I now have a number of co-workers who are truly disturbed by this and a couple of them had a hard time maintaining a professional working environment because they view this as an affront to their faith.

I finally had to sit a couple of them down and explain that North Carolina requires that weddings be performed by recognized ministers or by a judge andthe judges will not do them outside their chambers and only M-F 9 am to 11 am. If a couple wants to get married outside of chambers, days and hours, they have to go find a minister. State law also allows people in rural towns who have a "recognized but unordained community spiritual leader" to be wed by the the "spiritual leader" so whats better....a couple has a friend with whom they share connections and common beliefs perform the ceremony or they pay some minister with whom they have no connections and who is free to preach fire and brimstone at them perform their ceremony?

They reluctantly agreed to disagree and become professional again.

Of course the shared belief of the bride, groom and me is atheism, but I didn't tell them that. I left them with some searching for truth, golden rule, struggling to find god in chaos mumbo jumbo new ager crap.

Oh and every City Council meeting starts with a Christian prayer the mayor leads. He doesn't even try to make to a non-denominational generic god. Its "Jesus thank for your blessings and smite our enemies - Amen"

Bill Maher said on his show this weekend that he doesn't believe (his word) in vaccinations and thinks that "Western medicine misses a lot of stuff." So, here's a guy who rejects the even the possibility of a higher power as absurdist fiction, yet he basically has faith in the healing powers of some tribal witch doctor promising to cleanse our energy fields with enemas and vitamin C. The Hindu god Vishnu will appear on earth in human form before Bill Maher can show me a subluxation on an ex-ray or present replicated, peer-reviewed studies demonstrating the dangers of vaccination.

Agnosticism is my path. We can not know, so why be consumed by trying.
