Maybe somebody from the city could get one of those emergency checks over to Home Depot and buy a bunch of Round Up. Those sidewalks are a trip hazard. If they don't, they should write themselves one of those blight citations. That's a joke!

I think the pics capture a lot but the vibe I get when I drive by those Brewster Projects is much heavier. The way the grass bends with the breeze along with all empty window holes, broken down doors and stripped fencing is amazing. Why anyone would put themselves around there after dark is beyond my comprehension.

I get the scary thing, but I like to see the resurgence of nature. One of my favorites over at the Detroit Blog was the array featuring gardens from ghost neighborhoods gone amuck. Not going all "fabulous ruins" on ya'll but, if you can look past the whole canary in the coal mine thing the long grass, weeds, and wildflowers are beautiful.

There's a spot in my yard where nothing cultivated will grow, so I'm slowly turning it into a 10x10 wildlife preserve. It'll probably be my favorite spot at The FUIGB Gardens.

Also good for rapes and hiding bodies.

We've covered Dubois before, but wow, this street was almost claustrophobic the grass was so high.

To give credit, some time earlier last week the grass was cut a Wigle (some) and the lot next to H?J's (both were about 4-5 foot high in places). Of course, Robert Redmond park is across the corner from H?J's and I couldn't tell you for sure if that's been touched. If Andy's pix were from Sunday, I guess not.

In a city beset by bigger problems, does anyone actually care that a park has been left un-mowed for all of spring and the first part of summer? Some neighbors cared enough to call FOX 2 and get something done.

It's was a park with a playground almost completely swallowed by weeds the size of extraterrestrial plants. Neighbors called the Problem Solvers on Friday.

"All of our neighbors, they all called in and tried to help and get it done," said Renee Harper. "You guys got it done in a weekend. We couldn't get it done in months."

After the weekend, we returned to the park and city workers were just finishing with the mowing and weed whacking.

"That's good," said Rochelle Crawford. "We wouldn't let our children go over there because it was so tall. ... We couldn't see them and... if something would have happened, we wouldn't have (known) what happened."

The children are especially excited now that they actually get to use the playground equipment.

I wouldn't have called Problem Solvers. I would have organized a group of neighbors for a park clean up. Yes, I know the point is the city isn't doing its job, but sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. Too dangerous for the kiddies to play? Mow it yourself.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now, what I'm with isn't 'it,' and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.
