One of my favorites over at the Detroit Blog was the array featuring gardens from ghost neighborhoods gone amuck. Not going all "fabulous ruins" on ya'll but, if you can look past the whole canary in the coal mine thing the long grass, weeds, and wildflowers are beautiful.
There's a spot in my yard where nothing cultivated will grow, so I'm slowly turning it into a 10x10 wildlife preserve. It'll probably be my favorite spot at The FUIGB Gardens.
In a city beset by bigger problems, does anyone actually care that a park has been left un-mowed for all of spring and the first part of summer? Some neighbors cared enough to call FOX 2 and get something done.
It's was a park with a playground almost completely swallowed by weeds the size of extraterrestrial plants. Neighbors called the Problem Solvers on Friday.
"All of our neighbors, they all called in and tried to help and get it done," said Renee Harper. "You guys got it done in a weekend. We couldn't get it done in months."
After the weekend, we returned to the park and city workers were just finishing with the mowing and weed whacking.
"That's good," said Rochelle Crawford. "We wouldn't let our children go over there because it was so tall. ... We couldn't see them and... if something would have happened, we wouldn't have (known) what happened."
The children are especially excited now that they actually get to use the playground equipment.
